Key findings
- 92,212 km2Portugal's total area is 92,212 km2 - about 89,015 on the mainland plus the Azores and Madeira.
- 5.5xSpain is 5.5x Portugal's size, spanning 505,990 km2 against 92,212 km2.
- 1.7 million km2Portugal's maritime EEZ covers about 1.7 million km2, 18 times its land area and the EU's largest.
- 116.6Portugal's density is about 116.6 people per km2 on its 92,212 km2 of territory.
- 1297Portugal's borders have barely moved since the 1297 Treaty of Alcanices, among Europe's oldest fixed frontiers.
What is the total area of Portugal? The official answer is 92,212 km2 - the figure Portugal's own UN mission publishes, made of about 89,015 km2 of mainland plus the two Atlantic archipelagos, the Azores (about 2,351 km2) and Madeira (about 801 km2)12. The surprise is the sea: Portugal's Exclusive Economic Zone covers about 1.7 million km2, the largest in the European Union and roughly 18 times the land it belongs to3load4why5hours21. The mainland holds 96.6% of the territory and effectively all the border; the islands hold the country's volcanoes, its widest maritime claims and - in Madeira's case - a year-round spring that tourism prices reflect6space2(labelled)1continuously43.
This is not trivia: the EEZ hosts the fisheries, the deep-sea research claims, the submarine-cable landings and the offshore-energy leases that Portuguese policy calls the blue economy - a jurisdictional area larger than Hungary, Austria and Switzerland combined, administered from a country smaller than Indiana6full3terms2visitors7labelled)4labelled155.
The territory's shape amplifies its scale in everyday experience: driving from the northern border to the Algarve takes five and a half hours on motorways, but the same journey in 1900 took three days by road and rail. The interior remains the least populated third of the country, with density figures below 20 people per square kilometre in border districts, a demographic hollowing that coexists with dense Atlantic urbanisation in the coastal strip between Braga and Setubal.
Methodology
- Area: current official figures
- Population layer: Eurostat 2023/2024
- History: anchored on the 1297 treaty and the 1755 earthquake
Definition. Area: territorial land area as published by Portugal's UN mission and INE-based relays. EEZ: the Exclusive Economic Zone under UNCLOS, the sea territory where Portugal holds resource rights. Density: population divided by land area.
