Five hundred and fifty-four restaurants in Porto are listed, and 312 of them are rated 4.5 or better. That is a high share, and it means the rating alone will not choose for you: the review count and the distance do more work here than the score.

One hundred and ninety-nine stand within a kilometre of the centre, which covers the old town and the blocks above it. The rest spread into the neighbourhoods where the prices drop and the tables are easier to get (what food costs in Portugal).

Together they carry 438,988 reviews. Each has its own page with the opening hours, the rating and what it rests on, what is nearby, and a sourced data sheet.

The best restaurants in Porto are therefore a matter of sorting. Two hundred and thirty-nine of the 554 have 500 reviews or more, and 134 have at least a thousand. Sixty-seven combine 500 reviews with a rating of 4.7 or better, and that short list is the honest answer to the question of where to eat well.

Price is the next filter. Of the restaurants that publish a price band, 68 sit at 10 to 15 euros a person, the most common band, 31 at 5 to 10 euros and 28 at 15 to 20 euros. Nine publish 50 euros and over. The day of the week matters as much: 176 are closed on Sunday and 132 on Monday, so check the hours on a restaurant's page before crossing the city for it.

The most reviewed

Casa Guedes Progresso leads with 8,302 reviews at 4.6, a pork sandwich counter 407 m from the centre point. The next three are a churrasqueira 3.8 km (2.3 miles) out, a McDonald's and a Chinese buffet.

That is what a review count measures in a city of half a million: turnover, not cooking. The list is useful for finding a place that is open, busy and used to strangers, and no use at all for finding a good dinner.

Best rated with at least 500 reviews

Rua Busan holds a flat 5.0 from 528 reviews, 3.9 km (2.4 miles) out in the northern neighbourhoods. Below it sit three kitchens at 4.9 with two thousand reviews each, two of them inside the first kilometre.

Five hundred reviews is the floor used here because it is where a score stops moving. A 4.9 from 2,398 people, as at Flavour Fusion, is a stronger promise than a 5.0 from 528, and both are stronger than a 4.5 from thirty.

By kind of kitchen, the same floor gives a different leader each time. Among the Portuguese restaurants it is Casa Viúva, at 4.8 from 1,630 reviews and 400 m from the centre, with Antunes the most reviewed of them at 4,403. For the city's own sandwich, Santa Francesinha by Cufra holds 4.7 from 1,381, and the francesinha page compares the houses known for it.

Seafood means leaving the centre. The seafood restaurants with the most reviews are all in Matosinhos, about 7.5 km out, led by A Marisqueira de Matosinhos at 4.5 from 2,244.
