Porto metro map and getting around

Getting around Porto: the metro and its zones, Andante fares from 1.40 euros, the Andante Tour card, the historic trams and tram line 1, and the buses.

The Porto metro map is the first thing most visitors look for, and it answers only part of the question of getting around. Much of the historic centre is close enough to walk, with the metro and buses for longer hops and the historic trams as a ride in their own right rather than as transport.

Almost everything runs on one ticket system, the Andante card, priced by zone. A single ride in central Porto, zone Z2, costs 1.40 euros and is valid for an hour, and the card itself costs 0.60 euros once. The exception is the historic trams, which have their own fare. Knowing that one rule, and which zone your journeys fall in, avoids most of the mistakes visitors make with tickets.

Two hop-on hop-off bus tickets for seeing the city without planning routes: ride, get off where you like, get back on.

The network at a glance

Travellers often expect one transport ticket and one map to cover everything, and are caught out on the trams. Porto has three systems that matter to a visitor: the metro, the buses and the historic trams.

The metro is the backbone. A Porto subway map shows it reaching well beyond the centre, including line E out to the airport, and journeys are priced by the zones they cross. The metro and the buses share the Andante card.

The buses fill in the streets the metro does not reach. They run on the same Andante tickets and are the practical choice for places away from a metro station.

The historic trams are a separate world. They run on their own heritage routes, are paid on board with their own fare and are not covered by any period ticket. The best-known ride is Porto tram line 1 Foz do Douro service, which runs from Infante along the river to Passeio Alegre in about 20 minutes, a trip most visitors take for the view as much as for the destination.

Choosing a ticket

The mistake is to buy a pass by habit. For a visitor who walks most of the day and takes the metro two or three times, singles on the card are usually enough, and loading ten singles of the same type at once gives eleven rides.

The Andante 24 covers zone Z2 for 24 hours at 5.35 euros, and makes sense on a day of many short hops in the centre.

The Andante Tour card Porto visitors can buy covers the whole Andante network, metro and buses, for 24 hours at 7.75 euros or 72 hours at 16.55 euros. It is transport only, with no museum entries or discounts, and it suits a stay with long journeys across several zones.

None of these tickets works on the historic trams. A Porto tram map shows the heritage routes, and the fare is paid on board: about 6 euros for a single ride, about 8 euros for two rides on the same day and about 12 euros for a two-day tram ticket. Treat those figures as approximate and check on board.

The Porto Card has changed: its transport version was withdrawn in March 2026, so check what the current card includes before buying it for travel.

Zones and the official map

Fares depend on zones, and the zone a journey crosses matters more than the distance. Central Porto is zone Z2, a longer trip may cross into Z3, and the airport sits in Z4, where a single costs 2.30 euros.

Use the metro do Porto map official version from the operator's own site, Metro do Porto, rather than a copy found elsewhere, because it shows the zones and the current tariff together. A copy can be out of date on both.

Before a day of travel, check which zone the day's furthest stop is in, then choose between singles and a day ticket. A single is valid for an hour within its zones, which covers most hops across the centre. If the plan includes the airport or a longer ride out of the centre, price that journey separately: a Z4 single on the way to a flight costs more than a Z2 single, and a day ticket for zone Z2 does not stretch that far.

Buses and the trams' own museum

A Porto bus map is the tool for anywhere the metro does not go. The buses, like the historic trams, are run by STCP, and they take the same Andante tickets as the metro.

For anyone curious about the trams beyond a ride, the Porto tram museum is worth a visit. The museum is at Alameda de Basílio Teles 51, open Tuesday to Sunday from 10 AM to 6 PM and closed on Mondays. It is rated 4.4 out of 5 from 3,541 reviews.

Mondays deserve a general note: most Porto museums close that day, while the churches, gardens, viewpoints and the riverside stay open. A Monday is a good day to ride the trams and walk the river rather than plan museum visits.

Before you set out

A Porto metro map PDF saved on your phone is worth having before a first day out, because it works offline and shows the zones you will cross. Check the operator's current tariff at the same time, since fares change.

Buy the card and load it before a busy moment, not at the platform with a train arriving. Decide on singles or a day ticket once you know the day's plan.

Have the tram fare ready when you board, and remember that no Andante ticket covers the historic trams.

For walks between the river and the upper town, allow more time than the distance on the map suggests.
