Most visitors taste Port where it ages, across the river from Porto, and the choice of lodge is wider than it looks from the quay. A port wine cellar Porto visitors walk into in Vila Nova de Gaia might mean a self-guided audio tour with three wines, a 50-minute guided visit with a white, a ruby and a tawny, or a long tasting of old tawnies in a historic room, and prices ran from 23 to 100 euros in September 2026.
Four houses publish their visits, prices and times and can be compared side by side: Taylor's, Sandeman, Ferreira and Graham's, plus WOW, the district of museums built from old cellars. The rest is how to get there, including the cable car, what a tasting includes, and how to choose.
Two lodge tours with tastings that can be booked ahead, for two more houses on the Gaia riverside.

Four houses compared
The common mistake is to join the first queue by the bridge. Each house runs its visits differently, and the difference is worth a few minutes of planning.
Taylor's has the most flexible format. Its visit is a self-guided audio tour in 13 languages, with no booking needed and no fixed start time. An adult ticket cost 25 euros and includes three Ports: Chip Dry, which is an extra dry white; an LBV; and a 10-year-old tawny. Children aged 8 to 17 pay 9 euros for grape juice and biscuits, under-8s enter free, and a family ticket for two adults and two children cost 62 euros.
Sandeman offers the widest price range. Its basic visit, 23 euros for 50 minutes, ends with three styles in a building where Sandeman has aged Port since 1811. The 1790 Visit, 35 euros for 90 minutes, pours five Ports, and the Old Tawnies Visit, 53 euros for 90 minutes, pours four in the 1790 Room.
Ferreira tells the story of Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira. Its visits start at her house and pass through the warehouse of vats and casks and the Vintage Museum, from a 50-minute visit with three Ports to longer Vintage tastings.
Graham's, in its lodge since 1890, runs every visit as a guided tour with a tutored tasting and food pairings.
For a day spent entirely among wine, World of Wine Porto, known as WOW, is also in Gaia.

WOW, the district of museums
The mistake is to treat WOW as one more lodge. It is a cultural district built from restored Port wine cellars in the historic centre of Vila Nova de Gaia, with seven museum experiences, 12 restaurants, bars and cafés, a Wine School and shops.
Among the WOW museum Porto experiences, the Wine Experience explains wine from the soil and the climate to the grape varieties and the making. The others go beyond wine: Planet Cork, on Portugal's cork oak forests; The Bridge Collection, more than 2,000 artefacts spanning 9,000 years of drinking history; The Chocolate Story; and The Pink Palace, devoted to rosé, with five rosé styles to taste.
The Wine School holds daily walk-in tastings, which suit a visitor who wants a glass without a tour.
WOW itself suggests setting aside a whole day to see it. A single museum and a meal can also fit into an afternoon alongside a lodge visit.
Among WOW's places to eat is the Barão Fladgate restaurant, in the grounds of Taylor's cellars, which looks across the Douro to the old town.

Getting there, and what a tasting includes
The mistake is to plan the crossing last. The route to Gaia shapes the afternoon.
From the Ribeira, the lower deck of the Luís I bridge crosses to the Cais de Gaia on foot. The Gaia cable car Porto visitors use to link the quay with the Jardim do Morro above runs for about 562 m; in 2026 an adult one-way ticket cost 7 euros and a round trip 10 euros, and it opened daily from 10 AM, closing between 6 and 8 PM depending on the season. The operator publishes the fares and hours.
A Porto wine cellar tasting varies by house and ticket. The basic visits at Sandeman and Ferreira pour three styles, a white, a ruby and a tawny, which is the quickest way to learn the two families. Taylor's pours a white, an LBV and a 10-year-old tawny. The higher tickets move to more wines, older tawnies or Vintages, in dedicated rooms.
Timing matters at Taylor's: the cellar opens from 10:00 to 18:15 and the tasting room until 19:30, and the house suggests arriving by 3:30 or 4 PM to see everything. On 23 June, São João, it closes at 16:00.

Casks, lodges and choosing
The mistake is to judge a lodge by its sign. What you see inside, and what you taste, differ more than the façades suggest.
The Porto wine cellars Vila Nova de Gaia barrels fill are working lodges: Taylor's tells over 300 years of history in its renovated cellars, Sandeman has aged Port in its building since 1811, Ferreira's visit crosses a long warehouse of vats and casks, and Graham's lodge has held all its ageing wine since 1890.
To choose between the port wine cellars Porto has across the river, start with time. With an hour, a basic 50-minute visit at Sandeman or Ferreira is enough. With two, Taylor's audio tour and tasting, or Graham's guided visit with food, fit well.
Then decide on depth. The tawny-focused tickets and the Vintage tastings suit someone who already knows the basics; the three-style tastings suit a first visit.
Then consider the day. Taylor's needs no booking; the other houses sell their visits online ahead.
Burmester, on the quay, is rated 4.3 from 1,641 reviews and was open from 10 AM to 7 PM, a short option close to the bridge.
The Port wine guide explains the styles before you taste them.
What you see inside differs more than the façades suggest.Planning the visit
One lodge is enough for most people; two in an afternoon works if one of them is short.
Go early or mid-afternoon. Taylor's cellar opens at 10:00, and a full visit there takes about 90 minutes.
Book the visits you care about. Sandeman, Ferreira and Graham's sell theirs online.
Bring children. Taylor's family ticket includes grape juice and biscuits for 8 to 17-year-olds, and under-8s enter free.
Plan the return. The cable car and the lower deck of the bridge both lead back towards the Ribeira.
A Porto Portugal wine cellar visit pairs well with a meal: Graham's has its Vinum restaurant, Taylor's has the Barão Fladgate, and WOW has twelve places to eat and drink.
Prices change, and the ones given are those published in September 2026 on the houses' own sites, such as Taylor's and Sandeman.
