Porto is a walking city, and a Porto walking tour early in the trip is the quickest way to understand it: where the old town ends, why the streets climb, and which of the famous sights are worth the queue. The choice ranges from free tours paid for with a tip at the end to small paid groups, themed walks and private guides.
Below they are compared by price model, length, route and meeting point. Across the 84 paid walking tours of the city bookable online, not counting food walks and bike tours, ratings average close to 4.9 out of 5, and most last three hours. The differences that matter are group size, what is included, and whether the tour goes inside the sights or only passes them.

The old town with entry to Livraria Lello
Free, paid, themed or private
The mistake is to assume a free tour and a paid tour are the same walk at different prices. They differ in group size, booking and what is included.
Free walking tours Porto companies run are tip-based: there is nothing to pay at the start, and each guest tips what they think the tour was worth at the end. They run daily in English and Spanish and cover the main sights of the historic centre from the outside.
Paid tours are booked and paid in advance, usually with free cancellation. Of the 84 in the city, 31 last three hours and 18 last two and a half. Some add entry to Livraria Lello or the cathedral, and several cap the group at eight people.
Themed walks follow one subject: Jewish heritage, Harry Potter, legends, or the secret corners of the old town.
Private tours, 17 of them, take only your party.
Whether you book a tour guide Porto residents recommend or a large international company, check three things before choosing: how many people the group takes, whether the price includes any entry tickets, and where the walk starts and ends.
A free walk and a paid walk differ in group size and in what is included.Free tours and paid tours compared
The mistake is to expect a small group on every tour. Several paid tours cap the group at eight; check the size on a free tour before joining.
The best-known Porto free walking tour is run by SANDEMANs NEW Europe, which offers daily tours in English and Spanish. Its route takes in the cathedral, a walk across the Luís I bridge, the tiles of São Bento station and a look at Livraria Lello from outside. CityLovers runs a two-and-a-half-hour free tour in English and Spanish, from the cathedral to the Ribeira. Porto Walkers, a group of local guides, run a classic free walking tour and a lifestyle one, and a sunset walk from the Cordoaria to the Jardim do Morro.
Paid tours cost more but fix the price and usually the group size. The most reviewed paid tour, a three-hour highlights walk, runs in French, Dutch, English, Spanish and German. Others include tickets: a one-hour guided tour of the cathedral with entry, or a three-hour walk with entry to Livraria Lello, where the voucher to enter comes off the price of a book.
A private Porto walking tour sets its own pace and route, and suits families, travellers with limited mobility and anyone with a special interest. Private tours in the city are rated close to 5.

Themed walks and where they meet
The mistake is to take a second general tour on a second day. If one walk has been done, a themed one covers new ground.
Among Porto walking tours with a theme, the Jewish heritage walk lasts three hours; the Harry Potter tour, two and a half hours, meets inside São Bento station at the start of platforms 3 and 4; and walks on history and legends, or on the secret sites of the old town, last about three hours.
Porto guided tours of single monuments are shorter: the one-hour cathedral tour with entrance tickets meets by the pillory in front of the cathedral.
Meeting points cluster in a few places. The cathedral square, by the pillory or the statue of Vímara Peres, is the most common. Others start at the Lions Fountain on Praça de Gomes Teixeira, at the Aliados, at Trindade metro station, at Praça da Ribeira, or opposite the Clérigos. Check the exact point on the booking, as some tours use a different one for each option.
Starting at the cathedral means the walk goes mostly downhill to the river, which is the easier direction in Porto.

Walking without a guide
The mistake is to think the city needs a guide to make sense. The historic centre is about 2 km across, and the main sights are a few hundred metres apart.
To plan a unique Porto walking tour of your own, start at São Bento station, walk 310 m up to the cathedral, go down about 350 m to the Luís I bridge and along the river to the Ribeira, then climb 485 m from the Palácio da Bolsa to the Torre dos Clérigos. The distances are short, but the climbs are steep.
Time it around the opening hours. The cathedral welcomes visitors daily between 9:00 and 18:30, the Bolsa is visited only with its own guide and pauses from 13:00 to 14:00, and Lello is open from 09:00 to 19:30. Most museums close on Mondays; the churches and viewpoints do not.
The free tours Porto operators run are the middle way: a guide for the first morning, and the rest of the stay on your own.
The one-day plan has the full route hour by hour, and the half-day route the shortest version.

Choosing the right walk
The mistake is to book the longest tour on the day of arrival. Three hours on Porto's hills is a real walk.
For a first morning, a free tour Porto guides lead, or a three-hour paid highlights tour, gives the layout of the city. Book the paid one if you want a guaranteed small group.
For Lello and the cathedral without queuing twice, take a tour that includes the tickets. Lello's ticket-voucher system is explained on the bookshop's FAQ.
For a second walk, choose a theme.
For children, older travellers or anyone with limited mobility, choose a private tour and ask for a downhill route.
Wear shoes for cobbles, carry water in summer, and remember that 24 June, São João, is a holiday when Livraria Lello closes. The historic centre walked on these tours is part of a UNESCO World Heritage site inscribed in 1996.
Every paid walk listed can be cancelled free, which helps when rain is forecast.

How long is a walking tour in Porto?
Most paid walking tours last three hours, and many last two and a half. A guided cathedral visit takes about an hour.
