Seven questions, one Porto neighbourhood
Answer the seven questions and one area comes back first, with what the catalogue holds there and the fares your choice moves.
Nothing is priced by the night: rates change by the date, and one sample weekend is not a price. Each card counts the Booking listings whose postcode falls in the area, with their median guest rating out of 10 and the straight-line distance from the middle of the Baixa. The airport metro fare, 2.30 euros each way for zone Z4 from 1 January 2026, is added for anyone without a car; every area is walkable to the centre, so no daily bus fare is added. A postcode can straddle two areas, and each is counted where most of its listings sit.
Porto's neighbourhoods are close together, but they suit different trips (what it costs to live here). A couple out late, a family with a bedtime, a traveller counting every euro and someone with a dawn flight each have a different best base, even when the hotels are only a kilometre apart.
The tool below ranks six areas, and the airport, against your answers: how many of you, how many nights, whether you go out, your budget, a car, small children and an early flight. Each card shows how many places the catalogue lists in that area, how guests rate them, and the fares the choice adds. The sections after it explain the reasoning.
Two first-morning tours that show where the areas sit, whichever one you choose.

How the tool ranks the areas
The mistake is to read the top answer as a verdict on the neighbourhood. It is a verdict on your trip.
Each area starts level and gains or loses points from your answers. Going out at night lifts the Baixa most, for the Galerias de Paris bars, and the Ribeira next. A tight budget lifts Bonfim, the least expensive central area, and marks the Ribeira down, as the dearest. Small children lift Cedofeita and Miragaia, near the Palácio de Cristal gardens, and mark the Ribeira down for its hills. A comfortable budget lifts the Ribeira and Miragaia, where the upmarket hotels are. An early flight lifts the Baixa, on the airport metro line.
Nothing is priced by the night. Rates move with the date, and one sample weekend cannot say what an area costs in general. What the tool adds instead is the airport metro both ways for anyone without a car, the one fare the choice of base actually affects.
The counts on the cards come from postcodes, because every listing carries one. They differ a little from the counts on the area pages, which use a radius around each centre.

Night out or early nights
The mistake is to book on the river for the nightlife and then find the bars you wanted are uphill.
For going out, Porto's liveliest bar quarter, the Galerias de Paris, sits just below the Clérigos on the edge of the Baixa, so a Baixa base keeps the walk home short. The Ribeira's quay has its own terraces and wine bars, better suited to the hours around sunset.
For quiet evenings, the residential areas rank higher. Cedofeita has the feel of a lived-in quarter around its gallery street, Bonfim is a parish of about 23,000 people with many local restaurants, and Miragaia's riverside is calmer than the quay.
With children, a bedtime matters more than a bar, so the tool lets the children's answer outweigh the night out. The note under the tool says so when both are ticked.
Remember that the old town is steep, with the two decks of the Luís I bridge 45 m apart. Sleeping uphill and walking down to the water in the morning is easier on the legs than the reverse.

Budget, and what a sample weekend showed
The mistake is to treat the Ribeira's premium as a myth or as a rule. For one sample weekend, it was measurable.
For one sample stay, two nights from 10 October 2026, the typical lowest rate came to about 182 euros a night in the Ribeira, about 147 in Miragaia and Massarelos, about 144 in the Baixa, about 142 in Cedofeita and about 127 in Bonfim, against about 137 for central Porto as a whole. The cheapest single rates started at about 16 euros in the Baixa and 17 in Bonfim.
Those are radius figures from the area pages and one set of dates, so the tool uses them only as notes, not as prices. Prices move through the year, and the where to stay in Porto guide sets out the full comparison.
The nightly tourist tax, set by the Porto municipality, is charged at the same rate in every area of the city, so it does not change the ranking.
For a tight budget, Bonfim and the Baixa give the widest choice below or near the median.

A car, and the early flight
The mistake is to choose a base for the car and forget the other five days. In the centre, a car mostly waits.
A car barely changes the ranking, because every area in the tool is a walk from the centre and the metro covers the longer rides. What a car does change is the airport fare: without one, the tool adds the metro both ways, 2.30 euros each for the zone Z4 ticket on line E, per person. With one, that line disappears. If the car is only for day trips, the car rental page explains hiring it for those days alone.
An early flight is the one case where the airport itself becomes an answer. Metro line E runs from Trindade to the airport in about 27 minutes, so for most flights a base in the Baixa near Trindade is enough, and the tool lifts it. The airport card appears only when the flight is before the city wakes, and it says plainly that the catalogue lists nothing out there.
Fares by zone are listed by Metro do Porto, and the airport itself is covered on the Porto airport page.
In the centre a car mostly waits. When the tool and your instinct disagree
The mistake is to override the tool without knowing why it disagreed. Usually one answer is pulling harder than expected.
If the Ribeira comes first but the price worries you, try the budget answer: the tight setting marks it down sharply. If Bonfim comes first but you want the river, the Ribeira and Miragaia sit on the water and rank higher on a comfortable budget.
Gaia ranks low on almost every trip for one reason only: very few places in the catalogue are on that bank, so the choice there is small. For the view back at the Ribeira and the Port lodges, it is still worth a look, and the Vila Nova de Gaia page covers it.
Boavista and Foz are not in the tool, because the catalogue data covers the centre only. Both are good bases for other trips: Boavista for Casa da Música and Serralves, Foz for the sea. The neighbourhoods section covers all eight areas.
Whatever the answer, check three things before booking: whether the building has a lift, the nearest metro station, and whether the walk to the old town is uphill or down.

Common questions
Which Porto neighbourhood is best for nightlife?
The Baixa, near the Galerias de Paris bar streets below the Clérigos, with four metro stations. The Ribeira's quay suits the hours around sunset.
Which area of Porto is cheapest to stay in?
Bonfim, east of the centre, had the lowest median rate of the central areas for an October 2026 weekend, about 127 euros a night against 137 for the city.
Where should families stay in Porto?
Cedofeita or Miragaia, near the Palácio de Cristal gardens, rank highest with small children. The Ribeira's steep streets rank lowest.
Is it worth staying near Porto airport for an early flight?
Rarely: metro line E reaches the airport from Trindade in about 27 minutes, so the Baixa usually works. The tool shows the airport only for a flight before the city wakes.
