Editor-in-chief

Mariana Gomes

Reads every research page before it is published and decides what the site will and will not say: which figures are strong enough to print, which need a second source, and which questions the data cannot answer yet.

She trained as a journalist at Universidade Nova de Lisboa and took a postgraduate diploma in wine business and gastronomic criticism at the Escola de Hotelaria e Turismo do Porto. Before this site she was deputy editor at Time Out Portugal and lifestyle editor at Observador, directing wine, food and travel coverage from Porto, London and Lisbon for more than fourteen years.

She is a member of the Portuguese Guild of Gastronomic and Wine Journalists and has judged regional competitions, among them Northern Portugal craft beer and D.O.C. Douro wine panels, and advises independent cultural trusts on architectural preservation in the UNESCO world heritage zones.

She reviews what Tiago Santos writes, and a figure that turns out to be wrong is corrected on the page with the date of the correction, as the editorial principles set out.
