Porto to Braga for the day

Porto to Braga takes about an hour by urban train for 3.60 euros. A day covers the oldest cathedral in Portugal, Bom Jesus do Monte and its water funicular.

Porto to Braga is one of the easiest day trips in the north. The urban train takes 54 to 71 minutes and cost 3.60 euros each way when last checked, and by road the city is 53.7 km away, about 42 minutes. A coach tour is a choice, not a need.

What the day holds is two sights of different kinds. In the centre stands the oldest cathedral in Portugal, visited on three short routes at 3 euros each. On a hill outside the city is Bom Jesus do Monte, a sanctuary on the UNESCO list since 2019, reached by a stairway of about 580 steps or by a funicular that has run on water since 1882. One sits in the streets and one above them, and the day goes wrong only when it leaves no time to get between the two.

How much of a day it takes

The mistake is to believe Braga is a half-day. As a Braga day trip from Porto it fills the hours between a morning train and an evening one, and the reason is the geography: the cathedral is in the centre and Bom Jesus do Monte is about 4 km away in a straight line, up a hill.

Tours solve this by pairing the city with Guimarães. Of the 49 tours from Porto that name Braga, 36 add Guimarães, and a day shared like that leaves about three hours in each place. That is enough for the sanctuary and a walk through the centre, and not enough for all three routes of the cathedral as well.

Going on your own, the choice is yours to make. Give Braga the whole day and both sights fit without hurry. Braga itself has 193,324 residents and stands at 215 m. It is wetter than Porto, with 1,448.6 mm of rain a year against 1,237 mm, so the forecast matters for a day that ends on an open stairway.

Train or car

The mistake is to book a seat. The train to Braga from Porto is an urban service: the ticket loads onto a Siga card, which costs 0.50 euros, and is valid on any departure, so there is nothing to reserve and no train to miss. The fare was 3.60 euros for a single. Trains leave from São Bento station, and the urban network they belong to has 87 stations on 211 km of line.

Fares are set by Comboios de Portugal and change, so check the CP site before you travel.

By car the drive is 53.7 km and takes about 42 minutes. A car earns its cost only if the plan includes Bom Jesus and a second town the same day: the sanctuary is 58.2 km from Porto by road, about 50 minutes. For Braga alone, the train is the simpler way.

The sanctuary on the hill

The mistake is to think the stairway is the only way up, or that the funicular is a modern convenience. Reaching Bom Jesus do Monte from Porto takes about 50 minutes by road, and at the foot of the hill there are two ways to the church.

The stairway has about 580 steps and is free at any hour. Beside it runs the funicular, 267 m long, which has worked on water counterweights since 25 March 1882. A single ride was 2.50 euros and a return 4 euros when last checked. Riding up and walking down takes in both.

The first hermitage on the hill dates from 1373, and the grounds of the sanctuary cover 232 hectares. UNESCO inscribed the sanctuary as World Heritage in 2019, and describes it on its page for Bom Jesus do Monte.

The oldest cathedral in the country

The mistake is to arrive at lunchtime. Braga cathedral, the Sé de Braga, is the oldest in Portugal, and it keeps church hours: 8:00 to 13:00 and 14:30 to 18:30, with the middle of the day closed. Tourist visits inside the church stop during services.

The visit is sold as three routes. One is the Treasury-Museum, one the chapels and the high choir, one the cathedral itself, and each cost 3 euros when last checked. Any two together cost 6 euros and all three 7 euros. Children up to 12 enter free. The ticket desk is in the cloister, and the address is Rua D. Paio Mendes.

With the midday closing in mind, the order of the day settles itself: the cathedral in the morning, lunch, and the sanctuary in the afternoon.

Braga with Guimarães, or alone

The mistake is to decide between the two towns before deciding how you travel. Guimarães is 54.3 km from Porto by road and Braga 53.7 km, each about an hour away on its own urban train. The two are most often sold as one tour, with a coach between them.

The most reviewed of those tours covers both cities with Bom Jesus and the castle of Guimarães in nine hours, and is rated 4.6 out of 5 from 4,558 reviews. Smaller groups with lunch and tickets included score higher, around 4.8, from fewer reviews.

Tours that name Braga are rated 4.86 out of 5 at the median, so the choice is about time, not quality. Choose the tour if you want both towns in one day. Choose the train if one town done properly matters more. The day trips from Porto page compares all of them.
