The river is the one view of the city you cannot get on foot, and booking a Porto river cruise is the easiest way to see it. The choice is wider than it first appears: some boats spend 50 minutes going under the bridges between Porto and Gaia, others spend two hours sailing out towards the Atlantic with a glass of Port, and some are private yachts for a couple or a family.
Below, the cruises sold in the city are compared by length, boat, departure point and what comes on board. Across the 164 river cruises bookable in Porto itself, not counting trips up the Douro Valley, the median rating is about 5 out of 5, so the choice is less about quality than about fit.
The two most booked formats: the short classic and the longer cruise with Port.

The kinds of cruise
The mistake is to book the first boat on the quay without knowing what else is sold. City cruises fall into four groups.
The short six-bridges cruise is the classic. Eleven tours of about 50 minutes sail between the bridges on traditional-style boats; together they have more than 28,000 reviews, with a median rating of about 4.2. The most reviewed passes all six: the Arrábida, Luís I, Infante D. Henrique, Maria Pia, São João and Freixo bridges.
Two-hour cruises are the largest group, with 64 standard boats, 26 sailboats and 8 yachts. Most leave from the marinas rather than the Ribeira, and many include Port or wine and snacks. Their median rating is close to 5.
Private boats, 41 of them, take only your party, usually for two hours.
Combinations, a dozen in all, add the cruise to a tuk-tuk ride, a walking tour, a hop-on bus or the cable car.
A Douro river cruise Porto sells in the city is a different product from a trip upriver. A Porto Douro Valley river cruise sails inland for a day towards Régua and usually returns by train or coach; the Douro Valley cruise page covers those.

A city cruise or a day on the valley
The mistake is to expect vineyards from a city cruise. The terraced Port vineyards begin far upriver, around Barqueiros, and the city boats never reach them.
A Douro cruise Porto operators run from the quays stays within the city: it passes the bridges, the Ribeira, the Port lodges on the Gaia bank and, on the longer trips, reaches the river mouth at Foz. It lasts from 45 minutes to two hours, and it fits into an afternoon.
A valley cruise is a full day. Boats can navigate 210 km of the river, up to Barca d'Alva, and a day cruise towards Régua goes through the Crestuma-Lever and Carrapatelo locks; and day cruises from Porto usually end at Peso da Régua, returning by train or coach. A winery stop or tasting is extra unless the tour description includes it.
A Douro Valley boat tour from Porto is often part of a coach day instead: several of the most booked valley tours drive to the Douro and add a short boat trip there, with lunch and tastings. That is the better choice for travellers who want the vineyards and have only one day.
For a first visit with limited time, the city cruise is the right size. The valley is worth a whole day, and the Douro Valley tours page compares the options.

Where the boats leave from
The mistake is to go to the Ribeira for every cruise. Many of the two-hour boats leave from marinas some distance away.
The short six-bridges cruises leave from the riverside on both banks, at the Ribeira quay on the Porto side and along the Gaia waterfront by the lodges.
Many two-hour cruises, sailboats and yachts start from the Douro Marina, at Afurada on the Gaia bank near the river mouth, from a numbered pontoon; check the pontoon letter in the booking. Others leave from the Freixo marina, upriver in the east of the city.
Porto river cruises from Freixo pass the baroque Freixo palace on the way.
For cruise-ship passengers, a port to Porto Douro cruise day starts at the Leixões terminal in Matosinhos, beside the working port; central Porto is about 30 minutes away by metro, and the marinas are closer to the coast.
Arrive early: some operators ask for 15 minutes before departure.

Sunset, private and sailing boats
The mistake is to book a sunset cruise for a fixed hour without checking the season. Departure times for sunset options move through the year with the sunset itself.
Of the city cruises, 37 have a sunset option in their title. They are almost all two-hour trips, and many pour Port or wine on board. In July, Porto averages 308 hours of sunshine; in December, 124, so winter sunset cruises leave earlier in the afternoon.
A private boat tour Porto operators offer takes only your group, usually for two hours, on a small motorboat, sailboat or yacht. With 41 of them, most rated close to 5, it is a practical choice for a family, a proposal or a small celebration,.
There are 26 sailboat trips to choose from. Yachts, eight of them, add comfort, drinks and snacks. Blankets are provided on some boats for cooler evenings, and several list a bathroom on board, which matters on a two-hour trip.
For a livelier evening, one party boat runs two-hour trips with music and a sunset option.
Sunset departures move through the year with the light.Choosing the right cruise
The mistake is to judge Porto boat tours by the review count alone. The most reviewed are the short classics; the highest rated are the small boats.
For a first view of the city in under an hour, take a six-bridges cruise. The most reviewed has an audio guide in four languages by QR code, but no headphones, so bring your own; children up to 3 travel free if declared when booking.
For a relaxed two hours with a drink, take a two-hour cruise from the marina, and choose the sunset option in the warmer months.
For a couple or a family who want the boat to themselves, choose a private boat.
For the bridges' history, remember that the Maria Pia railway bridge was built by Gustave Eiffel's company in 1877, nine years before the Luís I, which was designed by his former partner Théophile Seyrig. The bridge sits inside the city's UNESCO World Heritage site.
All the listed cruises offer free cancellation, so a booking can be moved if the weather turns. For how cruises fit into a day, see the one-day plan, and for the valley, Visit Portugal's Douro cruise page.
