What you get

The Baixa is where you sleep around Avenida dos Aliados. It holds 409 places of the same kind on the site, or 56 percent. Four metro stations are in the area, so you can stay here and still move around Porto easily. The group includes guest houses, apartments, hostels and hotels.

That mix means you are not choosing between one kind of room. You are choosing from a deep list in one central district. This is for you if you want a broad choice in the city and you are happy to compare many properties before you book.

It is also for you if you want to be near those four metro stations rather than in a smaller neighbourhood. The group is not a single property or a single tour. It is a collection of places to stay, and the sections that follow tell you what the prices and the ratings look like so you can pick one.

Among the 409 options in this group, three are picked for different reasons: the most reviewed, the best rated on a solid number of reviews, and the cheapest of the well rated.

What these cost, and what you get for more

Prices in the Baixa start at 15 EUR and go up to 954 EUR. The middle price is 139 EUR, and the area sits close to the city median. That middle figure tells you the typical listing is not a budget bed and not a luxury suite.

A large part of the group falls between 60 EUR and 250 EUR: 131 listings are in the 60 to 120 EUR band, and 222 are in the 120 to 250 EUR band. If you want to spend under 30 EUR, only 4 listings fit. From 30 to 60 EUR, there are 8.

So the cheap end is thin. At 250 EUR and over, there are 43 listings. To see how that spread looks in practice, Grande Oceano Guest House starts at 75 EUR. On the higher side, Pestana Porto - A Brasileira, City Center & Heritage Building starts at 361 EUR.

The band from 120 to 250 EUR is where you will do a lot of your comparing, and the 60 to 120 EUR band is the next one. If your budget is below 60 EUR, you have 12 listings to look at.

How far to trust the ratings

The rating evidence in the Baixa is complete. Every listing in the group has at least ten votes. There are 296 listings scoring 8.1 or above with at least ten votes, and 113 scoring from 7.0 to below 8.1. There are 0 listings below 7.0, and 0 with fewer than ten votes.

That means the group's scores rest on a sound basis across the board. You do not have to worry that a high score comes from a handful of reviews. Three examples show the range. GRANDE HOTEL PARIS by STAY HOTELS has 8.2 out of 10 from 3,741 ratings.

Eurostars Porto Centro has 9.0 out of 10 from 1,874. VIVA Trindade Downtown has 7.5 out of 10 from 43. The first two show what a high score looks like when thousands of people back it. The third shows what a lower score looks like when the sample is much smaller, though 43 ratings is still enough to count.

When you compare scores inside this group, look at the number of ratings behind them. A 7.5 from 43 and a 9.0 from 1,874 are not the same kind of evidence. The group has no weakly evidenced scores at all.

Which one to pick

Choosing inside the Baixa comes down to price and evidence first, then type. If you want a hostel, Nice Way Porto Hostel is in the group. GuestReady - Casas de Mompilher and Porto Essence are also options. Free cancellation is available on 91 listings, so if that matters to you, it narrows the list quickly.

Now draw the line against the neighbouring groups. The Baixa is not the same as the whole city: every place to stay on the site is 728. If you want a specific property type, there are separate groups: Hotels 87, Apartments 549, Guest houses 63, Hostels 27.

If you want only scores of 9 and above, that group has 204. If you want a different neighbourhood, Ribeira has 93, Cedofeita has 66, Bonfim has 124, and Miragaia and Massarelos has 29. Choose the Baixa when you want a broad choice in this central district.

Choose one of those other groups when you want a narrower type, a specific rating band, or a different part of Porto. Inside the Baixa, use the price band that fits you, then check the number of ratings behind the score. That is how you make the group work for you.
