Porto to Coimbra for the day

Porto to Coimbra is 1 h 09 by Alfa Pendular. A day covers the university on the hill and its Baroque library on a 16.50 euro ticket, and the old town below it.

Porto to Coimbra is the day trip that works better by express train than by any other means. The Alfa Pendular covers it in 1 h 09 and the Intercidades in 1 h 17, against about 1 h 23 by road for the 118.8 km. That speed is what makes a city this far south a day trip at all.

The day itself is one hill. The University of Coimbra sits on top of it, a UNESCO World Heritage site that has grown there for more than seven centuries, and its visitor ticket, 16.50 euros for an adult when last checked, takes about three hours to use. Below the hill is the old town, with the tomb of the first king of Portugal. A visitor who books the train and the ticket ahead has the whole plan.

What fits in a day

The mistake is to treat Coimbra as a stop on the way to somewhere else. As a Coimbra day trip from Porto it is a full day for one place, and the university alone takes the morning.

Coimbra has 140,816 residents. UNESCO describes a university that grew over more than seven centuries on a hill above the city, with 16th-century colleges, an 18th-century botanical garden and a University City added in the 1940s. In the centre below, the Monastery of Santa Cruz holds the tombs of Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal, and of his son Sancho I.

Tours rarely give it the whole day. Of the 29 tours from Porto that name Coimbra, most pair it with Aveiro or with Fátima, and the most reviewed, a ten-hour day with Fátima, is rated 4.73 out of 5 from 811 reviews. On those days Coimbra gets a few hours, and the library may or may not be among them: check what the listing includes.

Express train or car

The mistake is to turn up for this one without a ticket. The train to Coimbra from Porto is an express, the Alfa Pendular in 1 h 09 or the Intercidades in 1 h 17, and express tickets are sold for one seat on one train. This is the opposite of the urban trains to Braga and Aveiro, where any departure will do. Book the outward and the return trains before the day, on the CP site.

Fares on these trains are set per service and change with the train chosen, so read the price when you book.

By road Coimbra is 118.8 km from Porto, about 1 h 23. The car has one advantage, which is a stop at Aveiro on the way: Aveiro is 75.2 km from Porto, so it lies between the two. Without that stop, the train is faster.

The ticket for the hill

The mistake is to look for a ticket to the library alone. Joanina Library tickets are sold as a programme that covers the whole of the historic university: the Baroque Library, the Royal Palace, Saint Michael's Chapel, the Chemistry Laboratory, the Academic Museum, the Cabinet of Curiosities and the Mineral Gallery. It was 16.50 euros for an adult when last checked, and the university allows about three hours for it.

The ticket is not refundable, so choose the day before you buy. The library itself is open daily from 9:00 to 19:30.

The university sells the programme on its own visitor site, which also has guided versions. Prices are set for the calendar year and were valid for 2026.

Inside the university

The mistake is to rush to the library and skip the rest. A Coimbra university visit centres on the Royal Palace of Alcáçova, which has housed the university since 1537, and the library is one part of it.

The Baroque Library was completed in 1728 and served as the university library from 1777 into the 20th century. It holds about 60,000 volumes, printed between the 16th and the 18th century, and they can still be consulted: readers ask for about 750 works a year. The building was made to protect books. Its outer walls are 2.11 m thick, and two colonies of bats have lived in it for some two and a half centuries, eating the insects that eat paper. Each evening the tables are covered with leather against their droppings.

Below the reading rooms is the academic prison. The university long had its own jurisdiction, which kept its members out of the common jails, and the cells here were in use until that privilege ended in 1834.

The town below the hill

The mistake is to take the train home as soon as the ticket is used. The lower town has three things worth the afternoon, two of them tied to the first king.

The Old Cathedral, the Sé Velha, is Romanesque and was founded in the reign of Afonso Henriques. It is the only Portuguese cathedral of the Reconquista era to survive intact. The Monastery of Santa Cruz, in the shopping streets of the centre among the historic cafés, holds his tomb. And on the other bank of the river stands the Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Velha, recovered from the water that flooded it over the centuries.

UNESCO sets out what is listed on its page for the University of Coimbra. For the other towns within a day of Porto, the day trips from Porto page compares them, and Lisbon to Porto covers the express trains to the capital.
