A car, a tour or the metro?

Set your party, days, plans and month, and the calculator prices each way of doing the trip against the others.

The car day is Porto to Peso da Régua and back, 188 km by the routed road distance, at the ERSE petrol price for 7-13 September 2026 and a small car's official consumption, with free parking at the Museu do Douro. Hire rates are a national average for winter and summer from a car-rental broker's study reported in the press, not a Porto quote and not this year's price. The tour seat is the most booked Douro Valley day, converted to euros. Motorway tolls, insurance extras, a second driver and city parking are not counted.

Porto is a city where a car mostly waits: its old centre is steep and compact, and the sights are a walk apart. Beyond the city limits the picture changes, and the Douro's wine estates, the national park at Peneda-Gerês and the Paiva Walkways are far easier to reach with a car or on a tour.

The calculator below prices three ways of doing your trip, for your party, your number of days, your plans and your month: a hire car with fuel for a day in the Douro, a seat on the most booked Douro tour, and staying in the city on foot and by metro. Each line shows where its figure comes from. The sections after it explain what the numbers leave out.

If the answer is a tour, the two most reviewed Douro days, with the driving done for you.

What the calculator counts

The mistake is to compare a car's daily rate with a tour's ticket. A car day also needs fuel, parking and someone willing to drive; a tour day charges per person.

The car is priced as a day in the Douro: Porto to Peso da Régua and back, 94 km each way by road, about 75 minutes each way. Fuel is a small petrol car's official consumption, 5.1 litres per 100 km, at the regulator's reference price for petrol 95 of 2.115 euros a litre for the week of 7 to 13 September 2026. Parking at the Museu do Douro in Régua is free.

The hire rate is the weakest figure here, and it is labelled that way. It is a national average from a car-rental broker's study of its own bookings, reported in the Portuguese press: about 14 euros a day in winter and about 36 euros in summer (car hire prices). It is not a Porto quote and not this year's rate, so use it to compare, and check real quotes for your dates.

The tour is priced per person per day at the most booked Douro Valley day, which includes a winery, lunch and a boat.

Staying in the city is priced as two central metro or bus rides a day each, at 1.40 euros a ride.

When a car wins

The mistake is to decide on price alone. The car usually costs less, but it buys less.

On these figures, the car is the cheaper way to reach the Douro for two or more people in any month, because the hire and the fuel are shared while a tour charges each seat; alone, it is cheaper in winter and about level with a tour seat in summer. The car also wins for places tours and trains serve badly: there is no direct bus or train from Porto to Ponte de Lima, and none by rail to Peneda-Gerês.

A car also wins for a road trip of several days across the north, where no day tour applies at all. With a car, the Minho towns, the Douro and Amarante can be joined into one route: Amarante is 44 minutes from Porto by road, Viana do Castelo 58 minutes and Peneda-Gerês about 90.

A car loses when the day is about wine, because the driver cannot join the tastings, and when the plan is Porto itself, where it only waits. For hiring one, the car rental page covers the airport desks, tolls and pickup.

When a tour wins

The mistake is to price only the drive. A Douro tour includes things a car does not.

The most booked Douro Valley day drives to Régua, stops at a wine cooperative dating from 1959 for a tasting, serves lunch with Douro wine, and adds an hour on a boat at Pinhão. With a car, each of those would be a separate booking, and one of you would drive back after the tastings.

So a tour wins on what is included rather than on price: for a day built around wine, for a solo traveller in summer, and for anyone who would rather not drive unfamiliar roads.

The calculator prices the most booked Douro day; more than a hundred others, most with lunch and a boat, are compared in Douro Valley tours.

For other day trips, the train is often the better answer than either. Suburban trains reach Guimarães, Braga and Aveiro in around an hour for less than 4 euros each way.

When you need neither

The mistake is to rent a car for a city stay. The calculator's third answer is often the right one.

Inside Porto, walking and the metro cover almost everything. The old town is small enough to cross on foot, a central single costs 1.40 euros and lasts an hour, and a 24-hour central ticket costs 5.35 euros. The airport metro reaches Trindade in about 27 minutes for 2.30 euros.

The limits are the hills, which make short distances slow, and the places outside the metro's reach. For the sea, the metro goes to Matosinhos and tram 1 to Foz, so even a beach day needs no car.

If a car is only needed for one or two days out, hire it for those days alone rather than for the whole stay. That also avoids overnight parking in the city, which the calculator does not price.

The getting around Porto page covers the metro, buses and trams in detail, and the fares are on the Metro do Porto tariff page.

What the numbers leave out

The mistake is to treat the total as a quote. Several costs are real but not counted, because they depend on your booking.

Motorway tolls are not counted. Portugal has toll barriers on some motorways and electronic gantries on others, and a rental car's arrangement is the rental company's; ask at the desk. For foreign-registered cars, Easytoll links a bank card to the plate with a 0.32 euro fee per trip, as Portugal Tolls explains.

Insurance extras, a second driver, a child seat and a one-way drop are not counted.

Fuel prices change weekly; the regulator's figure used here is for one week in September 2026, published by ERSE.

Real driving on the Douro's hill roads uses more fuel than the official consumption figure.

The tour price is the lowest bookable option for the most booked tour; the card shows the current price, which changes with the date. With those caveats, the calculator shows which way the costs lean for your trip, which is the decision it is for.

Common questions

Do I need a car in Porto?

Not for the city: the historic centre is about 2 km across and the metro runs from the airport. A car helps for Peneda-Gerês, Ponte de Lima, the Paiva Walkways and the Douro's wine estates.

Is it cheaper to hire a car or take a Douro tour?

On hire, fuel and parking alone, a car costs less for two or more people. A tour includes a winery, lunch and a boat, and nobody drives after the tastings. The calculator prices both for your trip.

How far is the Douro Valley by car from Porto?

Peso da Régua is 94 km, about 75 minutes, and Pinhão 124 km, about 95 minutes, by road without stops.

What does fuel cost in Portugal?

The regulator's reference price for petrol 95 was 2.115 euros a litre for the week of 7 to 13 September 2026. Prices change weekly.
