Porto's hills are the reason most visitors never think of cycling here, and the reason Porto bike tours have become so popular: nearly two thirds of them use electric bikes, which take the climb out of the old town. The other draw is the flat ride along the Douro to the parks and beaches of the Atlantic coast.
Below, the options are compared: three-hour guided e-bike tours of the centre, riverside and coastal routes, longer rides and self-guided rentals, and the multi-day cycling holidays that run from Porto to Lisbon. Across the 30 bike listings in the city, 19 of them electric, the median rating is about 4.8 out of 5, and three hours is the usual length of a guided tour.

The kinds of bike tour
The mistake is to picture one kind of ride. Bike tours in Porto divide into four groups, and they suit very different travellers.
City e-bike tours take three hours through the old town and its viewpoints, with the motor doing the climbing. They are the largest group.
Riverside and coastal rides follow the Douro west to the city park and the sea, on a mix of riverside roads and bike paths. Some of them use ordinary bikes.
Longer rides and rentals run from a few hours to several days: a six-hour Atlantic route of about 45 km, a self-guided day with a boat and a Port tasting, and electric or ordinary bikes rented for one to four days.
A Porto to Lisbon bike tour is a different product altogether: a cycling holiday of about a week, sold by specialist companies rather than as a city tour.
A classic Porto bicycle tour on a standard bike still exists, at three hours along the river, for riders who prefer to pedal unaided. There are also beer bikes, which are a party rather than a tour.

City e-bike tours
The mistake is to think an e-bike tour is for people who cannot cycle. It is for people who do not want to push a bike up Porto's hills.
The most reviewed electric bike tour Porto offers, with 3,688 reviews and a rating of 4.8, takes three hours through the medieval streets of the Ribeira, past the cathedral, and across the top deck of the Luís I bridge for the view. It runs in German, Dutch, French, Spanish and English, and a baby seat can be arranged in advance.
A smaller operator's three-hour highlights tour, rated 4.9, uses premium electric bikes and includes a helmet, bottled water and a trunk bag, with food recommendations from a Portuguese guide.
Any Porto cycling tour on an e-bike has limits worth checking. The most reviewed is not suited to riders under 130 cm tall, people with mobility impairments or people with a low level of fitness; the premium tour sets a minimum height of 150 cm and is not suited to people over 75 or those who cannot ride a bike.
Private e-bike tours exist too, with a guide for your group alone, and at least one sunset bike tour runs for three hours.

Along the river to the sea
The mistake is to spend the whole ride among the old streets. The ride west along the Douro is the easiest cycling in Porto, and it ends at the Atlantic.
A three-hour tour on ordinary bikes follows the banks of the Douro, uses the bike paths of the city park, passes the remains of the São Francisco Xavier fort, known as the Cheese Castle, and looks for birdlife in the Calém garden. It includes the bike, a helmet, a guide, water and fruit, and starts from a shop in Miragaia on the riverbank.
For an ebike tour Porto riders can take at their own pace, a private three-hour e-bike tour covers the river, the parks and the beaches, and another follows the riverbank to the Atlantic coast and its gardens.
On the Gaia side, a coastal e-bike tour rides south as far as Senhor da Pedra.
For a longer day, a six-hour Atlantic route covers about 45 km of forest, beaches and coast at a medium to easy level, with bike, helmet, padlock and insurance included, starting by the Jardim do Morro metro station.
The self-guided option combines a bike for the day with a 50-minute six-bridges cruise, a Port cellar visit and a ride through the natural reserve of the Douro estuary.

Porto to Lisbon and longer trips
The mistake is to look for the long rides among the city tours. Multi-day cycling holidays are sold by specialist companies, several of them as self-guided trips.
A Porto to Lisbon cycling tour usually lasts eight days and follows the Atlantic coast. Eurobike, Cycling Country and Portugal A2Z all sell eight-day self-guided versions. Go Cycling Portugal's route runs south by Espinho, Aveiro, Figueira da Foz, Nazaré, Óbidos, Santa Cruz and Ericeira, with a transfer from Ericeira into Lisbon.
These trips are booked directly with the operators.
North from Porto, the Camino de Santiago can also be cycled: two rental listings offer a normal bike or an e-bike for the Portuguese Way, collected next to the Luís I bridge. On foot, the central route is about 233 km.
A true MTB tour Porto operators run in the city itself is hard to find: none of the 30 bike listings is a mountain-bike tour. The nearest thing is the Atlantic route, part of it through forest.
For the train alternative to Lisbon, the Alfa Pendular takes 2 h 58 min; timetables are on CP.
The long rides are sold by specialists, several of them self-guided.Choosing the right ride
The mistake is to judge a tour by its distance. In Porto, the gradient matters more.
For a first look at the city in three hours, take a city e-bike tour, and check the height and fitness limits before booking.
For a relaxed ride with the sea at the end, take the riverside route, on an ordinary bike or an e-bike.
For a whole day on your own, rent a bike or take the self-guided bike and boat day. The e-bike rental lists roadside assistance within the city of Porto, and it is not suited to children under 16 or riders over 100 kg.
For a mountain bike tour Porto itself has little to offer, so plan any off-road riding separately.
Helmets are included on many tours. The historic centre on the city routes is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and its streets are cobbled, so expect a bumpy ride in places.
All the listings shown offer free cancellation, which helps when rain is forecast.

Porto: Porto Bike or E-Bike Atlantic Route
★ 5.0 · 13 reviewsA six-hour ride of about 45 km through forest, beaches and the Atlantic coast, on a bike or an e-bike.
Common questions
Is Porto good for cycling?
The old town is steep and cobbled, which is why most city tours use e-bikes. The riverside route west to the parks and the sea is much easier.
How long is a bike tour in Porto?
Most guided tours last three hours. A longer Atlantic route takes six hours and covers about 45 km.
Can I cycle from Porto to Lisbon?
Yes. Several companies sell eight-day self-guided cycling holidays along the Atlantic coast, through towns such as Aveiro, Nazaré and Óbidos.
Are there age or height limits on e-bike tours?
Yes. The most reviewed city tour is not suited to riders under 130 cm, and another sets 150 cm and is not suited to people over 75. Check each listing.
