The picture most people carry home from Porto Portugal Douro river trips is the same one: tall, narrow, brightly painted houses stacked above the Ribeira quay, the iron arch of the Luís I bridge, and the Port lodges across the water in Gaia. It is a view that works from both banks, from the water and from above.
Seeing it well comes down to three things: where to stand, what you are looking at, and when the light is best.
Two ways to see the riverfront from the water, by day or at sunset.

On the quay
The mistake is to stay at water level. The Ribeira is best seen from below and then from above.
A walk along the Porto Portugal Ribeira Douro river quay starts at the Praça da Ribeira, the square locals call the praça do cubo, and runs past the Muro dos Bacalhoeiros to the Cais da Estiva. The riverside wall's arches were inspired by London's Adelphi warehouses, and the Alminhas da Ponte, a bas-relief on the quay, remembers the Ponte das Barcas disaster of 1809.
For a Porto Portugal river sunset, cross the bridge. The Ribeira faces south across the water, and at the end of the day the view of it belongs to the Gaia bank. Summer is the long-light season, with more than 300 hours of sun in July.
The stones underfoot are newer than they look: the quay's paving and benches were redone when Porto was European Capital of Culture in 2001. Film-makers have noticed the setting too, and the European Film Academy added the Ribeira to its list of Treasures of European Film Culture in 2022. The whole riverfront lies inside the UNESCO World Heritage site inscribed in 1996.
The quarter is best seen from the quay and then from above. The view from Gaia and the Serra do Pilar
The mistake is to photograph Gaia from Porto and leave. The classic view of the Porto river front is taken from the other bank.
From the Cais de Gaia, the riverfront of terraces rebuilt between 2000 and 2003, the Porto Ribeira colorful houses Douro river scene lines up across the water. Along that quay, 23 of the 28 concessions serve food and drink, and river excursions leave from its landings. Higher up, the Jardim do Morro, 294 m from the bridge and open at all hours, gives the wide view, and the monastery terrace on the Serra do Pilar, a short walk beyond and rated 4.8, the highest. The monastery was founded in 1537, with a circular church and cloister, and belongs to the same UNESCO site as the historic centre.
The two banks share a name, too. The Roman settlement of Cale stood on the Gaia side, and Portus Cale, its port on the north bank, is the root of both Porto and Portugal.
The Luís I bridge between them opened in 1886; its two decks are 45 m apart, and both can be crossed on foot.

Common questions
Where is the best view of the Ribeira?
From Gaia, across the river: the Cais de Gaia at water level, the Jardim do Morro above it, and the Serra do Pilar terrace highest of all. The garden and the terrace are open at all hours.
Where can I watch the sunset over the Douro in Porto?
From the Gaia side, looking back at the Ribeira, whose houses catch the evening light. The Jardim do Morro and the Serra do Pilar are the usual places.
Can you walk across the Luís I bridge?
Yes. Both decks, 45 m apart, can be crossed on foot: the lower one from the Ribeira quay, the upper one beside the metro.
