Choosing a Porto food tour

Choosing a Porto food tour: three-hour tasting walks, full-meal and evening tours, the local companies, pastel de nata classes, market classes and pub crawls.

A Porto food tour is the fastest way through a cuisine that does not show itself on the main streets: the tascas, bakeries, sandwich counters and market stalls where the city actually eats. In three hours, a guide takes a small group to several of them, and the tastings often add up to a full meal with drinks (tipping in Portugal).

Below, the options are compared: guided tasting walks by day and by night, full-meal and progressive dinner tours, the local and international companies behind them, hands-on pastel de nata and market cooking classes, and pub crawls. The 80 food listings sold in the city average close to 4.9 stars, and most take three hours.

Two tasting walks with many small plates and drinks, one by day and one in the evening.

The kinds of food experience

The mistake is to compare a food tour with a restaurant meal on price alone. A tour includes a guide, several stops and usually drinks, and many replace lunch or dinner.

Guided tasting walks are the largest group, 44 of the 80 listings. Most last three to four hours and visit several places for small plates and drinks. Some run in the morning, some over lunch, and some in the evening as a crawl through petiscos, Portuguese small plates.

Full-meal and dinner tours go further: a four-course progressive dinner moves between restaurants for each course.

Classes put you in the kitchen. Ten listings are pastel de nata classes, lasting one and a half to two and a half hours, and a dozen more cover wider cooking, some starting with a guided visit to the Mercado do Bolhão.

Pub crawls, four of them, are nights out with drinks and club entry rather than food tours, and are for adults only.

International companies work here too. Among the Eating Europe food tours Porto has two: a morning food and Port wine tour of three and a half hours, and a four-course progressive dinner with drinks.

Comparing the tasting walks

The mistake is to count stops instead of servings. What matters is how much food and drink is included, and whether it replaces a meal.

Among the best food tours in Porto by rating and reviews, a three-hour small-group tour rated 4.9 from 1,040 reviews serves 10 to 12 portions across breakfast and lunch with drink pairings, meeting near the Aliados metro exit. Its evening crawl, also three hours and rated 4.9, pours Port, beer, local wine and spirits with 10 to 12 petiscos.

A four-hour food and wine walking tour, rated 4.8 from 1,210 reviews, includes 10 tastings and three drinks, among them Port and ginja, with a full meal added on the four-hour version; dietary adjustments can be requested.

A three-and-a-half-hour full-meal tour, rated 5.0, includes local cheeses, a bifana, petiscos, pastel de nata and Port across four or more stops.

Taste Porto, a local company, sells its tours on its own site. In September 2026 it listed a Vintage and Port Wine Food Tour of three and a half hours with 13 tastings and seven drinks from 89 euros, the Downtown and Bolhão Market tour, vegetarian and pescatarian friendly, from 95 euros, and a craft beer and food tour from 75 euros. What you will eat

The mistake is to expect only francesinha and custard tarts. Porto's food tours cover a wider range, and the dishes on the plates are worth knowing in advance.

The four-course progressive dinner shows the typical spread: prosciutto and bread, a bifana, the pork sandwich, caldo verde, the potato and kale soup, a francesinha, the grilled meat and cheese sandwich, fish croquettes, tomato rice, and natas do céu for dessert, with vinho verde, local beer and Portuguese wine.

Other tours add canned sardines or mackerel, local cheeses and the pastel de nata.

Eating Europe's morning taste of Porto food tour, three and a half hours long, meets on the hill of the Jardim do Morro in Gaia and includes a tasting of four Ports with traditional food and coffee from a local café.

Tell the operator about allergies or a vegetarian diet when booking: some tours can adjust, and Taste Porto marks its downtown tour as vegetarian and pescatarian friendly.

The local dishes guide explains the francesinha, the tripe of the tripeiros and the rest of the city's menu.

Classes, markets and nights out

The mistake is to book a class expecting a tour of the city. Classes stay in one kitchen.

The most reviewed pastel de nata workshop, rated 4.9 from 2,142 reviews, takes 90 minutes in a studio on Rua Chã and includes a glass of wine, Port or a mimosa, with at least two tarts to take away. Another class, rated 5.0 from 1,805 reviews, teaches a grandmother's recipe in a host's home about 10 minutes by car from the centre, and is not suited to wheelchair users.

A chef-led class starts with a tour of the Mercado do Bolhão, then a hands-on tapas workshop and lunch of what you cooked, with a glass of Douro wine; it is for ages 14 and over.

Among the walking tours by brand, Secret Food Tours Porto runs a tour of three to three and a half hours through downtown Porto and the Ribeira, with five stops and a maximum of 12 people. Its menu includes the pastel de nata, canned fish and the bifana, and it meets at the Coliseu Porto Ageas on Rua Passos Manuel.

For a walking food tour Porto guides run in the evening, the crawls of petiscos are the gentler choice; pub crawls, with drinks, bars and club entry, are for over-18s.

Choosing the right food tour

The mistake is to eat a big breakfast before a morning food tour, or book dinner after an evening one. Most include enough to count as a meal.

The best food tour Porto offers for you depends on the time of day and the appetite. For a first day, a three-hour daytime tasting walk gives the city and its food together. For an evening out, an evening crawl of petiscos with drinks. For something to take home, a pastel de nata class. For a full dinner in one go, the progressive dinner.

Check the meeting point. Food tours in Porto meet near the Aliados, at the Coliseu on Rua Passos Manuel, by the Capela das Almas on Rua de Santa Catarina, in front of the Batalha cinema or, for the Gaia tour, at the Jardim do Morro.

Avoid Sunday for a market tour: the Mercado do Bolhão is closed that day and trades from Monday to Saturday.

For restaurants to try on your own afterwards, see where to eat. The municipal tourist tax, set by the Porto municipality, is separate from any tour price.
