Porto to Guimarães is an hour and a quarter by train, and the town at the other end is small enough to see properly in a day and important enough to deserve one. The urban train takes 1 h 10 to 1 h 20 and cost 3.60 euros each way when last checked. The station is a 10-minute walk from the old centre, and everything a first visit needs lies within that centre or at its edge.
Guimarães was founded in the 10th century and became the first capital of Portugal in the 12th. Its historic centre has been on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 2001 and covers 16 hectares. The three ticketed sights, the castle, the Ducal Palace and the church of São Miguel, open daily from 10:00 to 18:00 and cost 5 euros each.

Small groupA whole day, or half of one
The mistake is to give the town three hours between a coach and a lunch. A Guimarães day trip from Porto by train leaves the whole day for one place, and the place repays it. Tours do it differently: of the 47 tours from Porto that name Guimarães, 36 pair it with Braga, which leaves about three hours in each.
Three hours covers the castle and the palace. It does not cover the streets, and the streets are what UNESCO listed. The centre kept its medieval layout, and its houses are of a type worked out here in the Middle Ages: a ground floor of granite with a half-timbered structure above. The same way of building was carried to Portuguese colonies in Africa and the New World.
The listing was extended in 2023 to take in the Couros Zone, a quarter outside the old walls named after leather tanning. The craft is gone, but the tanneries and the workers' houses of the 19th and early 20th centuries are still there.
Founded in the 10th century, the first capital of Portugal in the 12th.Train or car
The mistake is to look for a reservation. The train to Guimarães from Porto runs on the urban network, where no seat is booked: you load a single onto a Siga card, a 0.50 euro piece of plastic, and board whichever train comes next. The single cost 3.60 euros when last checked and the ride lasts 1 h 10 to 1 h 20, starting at São Bento station. The railway company posts times and current fares on the CP site.
From the station at Guimarães the old centre is a 10-minute walk, so nothing more is needed on arrival.
By road the town is 54.3 km from Porto, about 43 minutes. A car makes sense when the day continues to Braga, which is 53.7 km from Porto, or when a party of four splits the cost. For Guimarães alone, the train does the job.

The castle and the first town
The mistake is to see the castle as the whole story. Guimarães castle is one of the two poles the town grew around, the other being a monastic complex to the south, and the town's first five centuries lie between them. UNESCO dates that first period from 950 to 1498.
The town's claim on the country is older than its walls. Guimarães is tied to the emergence of the Portuguese national identity and language in the 12th century, which is why the phrase first capital is used of it.
The castle, the Ducal Palace and the church of São Miguel keep the same hours: every day from 10:00 to 18:00, with last admission at 17:30. For a wider view, the Penha cable car climbs the Penha mountain. In September 2026 it ran every day from 10:00 to 18:30, with the ticket desk closing 15 minutes before the last ride; its hours change by the month.

Tickets for the three sights
The mistake is to buy three single tickets. The Ducal Palace Guimarães visitors come for, the castle and the church of São Miguel cost 5 euros each when last checked, but the palace and the castle together cost 8 euros, and 13 euros adds the Alberto Sampaio Museum.
The combined ticket for palace and castle is the one most visitors need. Add the museum if the day is yours and the weather is poor: Guimarães gets 1,448.6 mm of rain a year, more than Porto, and the museum is the indoor hour of the visit.
Last admission to all three is at 17:30. On a tour that reaches the town in mid-afternoon after Braga, that leaves little time, which is one more reason to check the order of the day before booking.

With Braga, or alone
The mistake is to choose the towns before the transport. Braga and Guimarães are each about an hour from Porto on their own urban train. The tours that sell them as one day link them by coach.
The one with the longest record is a nine-hour day that takes in the castle here and the sanctuary of Bom Jesus at Braga: 4,558 people have reviewed it, for an average of 4.6 out of 5. An eight-hour version for a small group stands at 4.88 from 205. Across all 47 tours that name Guimarães the median rating is 4.88, so the tours are well liked; what they cannot give is time.
Go by rail if the old streets and the Couros Zone are what you came for. Go with a guide and a coach if two towns in one day matters more. The day trips from Porto page sets the towns side by side, and UNESCO describes the listed area on its page for Guimarães.
