Picking up a car that car rental Porto airport desks hand over on arrival makes sense for some trips and none at all for others. The city centre is best on foot, by metro and by tram, and a car there is mostly a parking problem. The region is different: the Douro's wine estates, the Paiva Walkways, Peneda-Gerês and the towns of the Minho are far easier with a car than without.
Five things settle the question: the rental desks at the airport and their opening hours, the choice between picking up at the airport or later in the city, how motorway tolls work for visitors, the driving times to the places that really need a car, and the trips where the train or a tour is the better choice.

When a car is worth it
The mistake is to keep a hire car for the entire stay. Most visitors need one for two or three days at most.
Inside Porto, a car is not needed. The metro runs from the airport to the centre in about 27 minutes, one-hour tickets for the central zone cost 1.40 euros, and the old town is steep, narrow and made for walking.
Several day trips work well without a car. Suburban trains serve Guimarães, Braga and Aveiro for under 4 euros each way; and the Douro line reaches Régua and Pinhão, following the river.
A car earns its cost for places without good public transport. Peneda-Gerês has no train and thin bus service. Ponte de Lima has no direct public transport from Porto. Arouca's walkways and suspension bridge are about an hour's drive, and are reached by car or on a tour. And in the Douro, the wine estates lie up the valley sides, away from the railway, and Lamego and Mateus Palace are off the railway.
Guided tours reach all of these too, and they handle the driving on days that include wine tastings.

Days that need a car
The mistake is to think every car-friendly day is a long drive. Several are about an hour from Porto.
Porto car rentals are most useful for a run of two or three days out. Driving times below were computed over the road network, without stops.
The Douro: Régua is 94 km from Porto, about 75 minutes, and Pinhão 124 km, about 95 minutes. Vila Real, for Mateus Palace, is about 68 minutes, and Lamego about 86.
The Minho: Ponte de Lima is 83.7 km, about 59 minutes, and Viana do Castelo 78.2 km, about 58 minutes; Braga and Guimarães are each about 42 to 43 minutes.
The mountains and rivers: the Paiva Walkways at Arouca are 72 km, about 67 minutes, and Peneda-Gerês 116 km, about 90 minutes. Amarante is 60.6 km, about 44 minutes, by the A4 motorway, which carries on east towards Vila Real.
South: Aveiro is about 54 minutes and Costa Nova about 61; Coimbra about 83.
To rent a car Porto visitors can do it for a single day and return it the same evening, which avoids overnight parking in the city.

The desks at the airport
The mistake is to land after midnight expecting to collect a car. The desks keep daytime hours.
For car hire Porto airport desks, before security, include Avis and Budget from 07:00, Europcar from 07:00 to 24:00, Goldcar from 06:00 to 24:00, Guerin from 07:00 to 24:00, Hertz from 06:00, and Sixt from 07:00 to 24:00 in September 2026. Hours can change, so check them against a late flight.
Rental companies without a desk in the terminal were given their own parking area, P7, when the airport changed its car access rules in 2015; if your booking is with one of them, check where the handover happens before landing.
The airport's car hire page lists the companies and their contacts.
The airport is at Pedras Rubras in Maia, north of the city.

Airport or city pickup
The mistake is to pay for a car on days it sits in a car park. Where you collect it matters as much as the price.
Picking up at the airport suits a trip that starts outside Porto: a drive straight to the Douro, the Minho or a coastal town. It avoids the city centre altogether.
For a cheap car rental Porto airport arrival is not always the best moment. If the first days are in the city, take the metro in, and hire the car only for the days out. That saves several days' rental and any parking costs.
Car hire Porto downtown pickups suit exactly that pattern: collect in the morning for a day or two out, and return before the city days.
Compare the total, not the daily rate: the price quoted online may exclude extras such as additional drivers, a child seat, or cross-border travel into Spain for a trip to Santiago de Compostela, which is 230 km from Porto by road. Read the fuel policy and the deposit before booking.
Returning the car at the airport on the last day works well with a flight home, as the airport is outside the city.
Collecting at the airport suits a trip that starts outside the city.Tolls for visitors
The mistake is to assume every motorway has a booth. Portugal has two toll systems, and one of them has no booths at all.
On the traditional system, you take a ticket at a barrier when you join the motorway and pay when you leave, in a manual lane, while other lanes are reserved for electronic payment devices.
On the exclusively electronic system, gantries over the motorway detect vehicles as they pass, with no booths and no need to stop; a panel near each gantry shows the fees.
For foreign-registered vehicles, Easytoll links a bank card to the number plate, and tolls are then charged to that card, with an administrative cost of 0.32 euros per trip; it is valid for 30 days on all national motorways. The details are on Portugal Tolls, run by Infraestruturas de Portugal.
With a rental car, ask at the desk how tolls are charged, as the car is registered in Portugal and the arrangement is the rental company's.
For Porto airport car rentals, check the same points at collection: tolls, fuel, the deposit and the return time. For the airport itself, see Porto airport, and for the metro into the city, the Metro do Porto tariffs.
