Which Port cellar should you visit?

Four questions. The answer turns on your time, whether you can book, children, and what you want to taste.

How much time do you have?
Can you book ahead?
Are children coming?
What do you want most?

Answer all four and the tool names the visit that fits.

Across the river from the Ribeira, Vila Nova de Gaia holds the lodges where Port has been aged for centuries, and most of them open their doors to visitors. The hard part is not finding one but choosing: some need no booking, some welcome children, some pour aged tawnies in a historic room, and one district of museums can fill a whole day.

Four answers below narrow it to a single visit, with the product that sells it where there is one. The sections after it explain each answer and what the houses publish about their visits.

Visiting at your own pace with an audio guide

Why time and booking come first

The mistake is to choose a house by its name. What decides a good visit is whether it fits the hour you have and whether you can commit to a slot.

With no booking at all, Taylor's is the answer. Its audio tour needs no reservation: tickets are sold on arrival subject to availability, or online by time slot. The tour takes about an hour and the tasting about half an hour more, and to see it all before the cellars shut at a quarter past six, get there by mid-afternoon.

With an hour and a booking, the choice widens. Sandeman's standard visit is 50 minutes with three Ports; Cálem's combines a short interactive museum, a 30-minute guided cellar tour and a tasting.

With two hours, the longer tastings open up: Cockburn's cellar tour with a tasting at a level you choose, Sandeman's aged tawnies, and Graham's tasting with food.

With half a day or more, WOW, the district of museums built in old cellars, is the fit; the house itself suggests a whole day.

The lodges face the Ribeira from the opposite bank.

The entrance to a Port lodge in GaiaWhat decides a good visit is the hour you have and the slot you can take.

Visiting with children

The mistake is to leave the children out of the plan. One house publishes a full set of child prices and gives them their own drink.

Taylor's charged 9 euros for children aged 8 to 17 in September 2026, with grape juice from the Douro instead of Port and biscuits, and children under 8 went in free. Two parents and two children could go in together for 62 euros. The tour is self-guided, so the pace can follow the youngest visitor.

That is why the tool sends every party with children to Taylor's, the house whose child prices it can quote.

For a family day, combine the cellar with the cable car. The Gaia cable car runs from the quay by the lodges up to the Jardim do Morro, and in 2026 a child aged 5 to 12 paid 3.50 euros one way, against 7 euros for an adult.

Remember that the tasting itself is for adults, and plan lunch before rather than after. The Porto with kids guide covers the rest of a family day.

A first taste, or aged tawnies

The mistake is to book an expensive tasting before you know the styles. The tool splits first-timers from those who already know what they like.

For a first taste, the useful thing is to try the main styles side by side. Port divides into ruby styles, which keep the fruit and colour of young wine and rise from Ruby and Reserve to LBV and Vintage, and tawny styles, aged in cask, with indications of age of 10, 20, 30 and 40 years and single-year Colheitas. At Sandeman the standard trio is one of each main colour, white, ruby and tawny; at Taylor's it is a very dry white, a Late Bottled Vintage and a tawny aged ten years.

For someone who already likes tawny, the aged wines are the point. Sandeman's Old Tawnies Visit pours four in its 1790 Room over an hour and a half, and Cálem offers a tasting option with a 10-year-old tawny inside an hour.

The categories are defined by the Port authority, the IVDP, on its Port wine pages, and the Port wine guide sets them out in plain terms.

Port with food, and a day at WOW

The mistake is to taste Port on an empty stomach and call it a tasting. The houses that pair Port with food show how it is meant to be drunk.

Graham's visit pairs its cellar wines with cheese, chocolate and pastel de nata, with views of Porto and the two-tier bridge; the lodge has been Graham's since 1890, and its restaurant, Vinum, is on the same site for a meal afterwards. Sandeman's shorter answer is its one-hour Port and chocolate visit.

The pairings follow the classic advice: the institute suggests a 10-year-old tawny with pâté, strong cheese and dried fruit, and a young LBV or Vintage with chocolate cake.

WOW is a different kind of visit: a set of museums in former Port warehouses, seven experiences in all, including the Wine Experience, the Pink Palace for rosé with five styles to taste, and a chocolate story, plus restaurants and a wine school with daily walk-in tastings. Its day pass includes the museums and several tastings, and WOW suggests setting aside a whole day, which is why the tool keeps it for half a day or more, or for anyone who wants museums as well as wine.

Getting there and planning the afternoon

The mistake is to plan two lodges back to back. One visit and a walk along the Gaia quay make a better afternoon than two tastings in a row.

From the Ribeira, walk over the river on the bridge's water-level deck to reach Gaia; Taylor's gives its address as Rua do Choupelo 250. Above the lodges, the cable car runs up to the hilltop garden from ten each morning.

A good order is a morning in the old town, lunch, a lodge visit in the mid-afternoon, and the Jardim do Morro for sunset; the one-day plan is built that way.

Buy online where a time slot is sold, especially on weekends, and carry the booking on your phone. For Taylor's, walk-in tickets depend on availability.

Prices here were published in September 2026 and change; the Taylor's visit page has the current ones. For all the houses compared in depth, see the Port wine cellars guide.
