Key findings

  1. USD 675A round-trip flight from New York to Lisbon averages about USD 675, with deals from USD 243.
  2. 67.3 millionPortugal's airports boarded a record 67.3 million passengers in 2025, 23% above 2019.
  3. USD 37TAP's cheapest fares include no checked bag; the first one costs from USD 37 prepaid.
  4. 89.9%International routes carried 89.9% of passengers boarding in Portugal in 2024.
  5. 10 millionFaro became Portugal's third airport to handle 10 million passengers in a year, in 2025.
  6. USD 232London is the cheapest measured gateway, averaging USD 232 round trip to Lisbon.

The airfare is the smallest number on this page. A New York round trip averages USD 675 and London sits at USD 232 - but the traffic moving through Portugal's airports hit a record 67.3 million boarded passengers in 2025, 23% above the pre-pandemic peak, and every one of them met the same fee menu at checkout 1. This page prices both halves: the fare from your gateway, and TAP's charges for the bag, the seat and the wifi that the cheapest fare does not include2.

So how much is a flight to Portugal? From USD 232 in London to USD 852 out of Lagos at published averages, with TAP's first checked bag from USD 37 and seat selection free only from the Classic tier upward2. Everything below is verified against the airline's own tier pages, the aggregators' published averages, and the official passenger record 3.

How much is a flight to Portugal?

The published averages span a factor of four: USD 232 round trip from London, USD 490 from Berlin, USD 675 from New York, USD 697 from Toronto, and from USD 852 out of Lagos1. How much is a flight to Portugal from USA gateways beyond New York? The Kayak table that priced the New York average also shows deal floors - USD 243 on flexible dates - so the honest range for American travellers runs from about USD 243 lucky to USD 850 typical in high season 1. How much is a flight to Portugal from UK airports? London's USD 232 average is the cheapest measured gateway in the table, with low-cost carriers compressing it further on off-peak weeks1.

How much is flight from Nigeria to Portugal routes, the dearest in the table? Skyscanner lists Nigeria-Portugal round trips from USD 749-772, and Expedia prices Lagos-Lisbon from USD 852 - one-stop itineraries via TAP, Air France, Lufthansa or British Airways, with Google Flights' typical band running EUR 1,050-1,6501. And how much is a round trip ticket to Portugal in the abstract? Every number in this paragraph is a round trip for one person; the fares table carries the ranges and the deal floors side by side1.

The record traffic behind the prices

Portugal's airports have never been busier. Eurostat's series shows steady climbing through the 2010s - 23.8 million passengers boarded in 2009, 54.7 million by 2019 - then the pandemic cliff to 16.4 million in 2020, and five years of relentless recovery to a record 67.3 million in 20253. That is 23% above the pre-pandemic peak, achieved with the same two-runway capital airport as in 20194.

The chart's projection is deliberately cautious: fitting a straight line on the post-pandemic years only (the 2020 cliff breaks any full-series line), it points to about 75 million boarded passengers by 2030 - our calculation, not a forecast, and dependent on Lisbon's long-debated new airport actually opening 5. Congestion, not demand, is the binding constraint: Lisbon handled 49.8% of national traffic in 2023, and the burden has only grown since4.

What the data shows
  • 2025 boarded a record 67.3 million passengers, 23% above 2019.
  • The 2020 pandemic cliff cut traffic to 16.4 million, then five years of rebound followed.

Portugal's three big airports

Three airports divide the country between them. Lisbon's Humberto Delgado is the giant: 33.6 million passengers in 2023, 49.8% of the national total4. Porto's Francisco Sa Carneiro moved 15.9 million in 2024, up 4.8%, and Faro's Gago Coutinho - the Algarve's seasonal front door - crossed 10 million for the first time in 2025, its sixtieth birthday year4. The map plots each airport's record onto its district: the Lisbon-Porto-Faro triangle is where virtually every international visitor lands.

For the capital specifically: how much is a plane ticket to Lisbon, Portugal's biggest hub? The fares table above already answers it - every quoted average lands at Humberto Delgado. For the flight-booking reader, the geography is a pricing signal. The same search a week apart can price Lisbon and Porto differently because carriers allocate seats per route, and Faro's demand is violently seasonal - ten months of the year it is a mid-size airport, and in July and August it is a 10-million gate4. The fares table in the previous section prices Lisbon arrivals; the routes table at the end notes the nonstop options from Toronto and New York.

What the data shows
  • Lisbon's airport alone moves more passengers than the other two flagged airports combined.
  • Faro's 10-million 2025 confirms the Algarve's season as a system of its own.
  • The three flagged airports cover the Lisbon, Porto and Algarve markets - the triangle most visitors fly.

Domestic against international

Portugal's aviation market is internationally facing to a degree the domestic numbers make stark: of the 64.2 million passengers who boarded in 2024, 89.9% flew international routes and 10.1% flew domestic ones - the Azores and Madeira bridge traffic plus the Lisbon-Porto shuttle's remnants3. Against Europe's giants the scale is clearer still: Spain boarded 260.1 million passengers in 2024, Germany 199.7 million, Italy 183.5 million, France 167.8 million - Portugal's 64.2 million is a seventh of Spain's, flown into a country that welcomes more international tourists per resident than any of them 3.

The comparison explains the fare structure on this page. A market this international and this competitive - every major low-cost carrier plus TAP - produces the aggressive headline fares in the origin table, and then recovers margin through the ancillary fees the next sections price5. The split also predicts where prices will move: 2025's growth pushed international boardings to 60.6 million while domestic stayed near 6.7 million, so the route competition that caps fares into Lisbon is entirely the international kind - and the domestic bridges to the islands, flown on protected subsidy-backed routes, sit outside the fare table's logic altogether3.

TAP's fare tiers: what each one includes

TAP sells five economy-adjacent tiers, and the whole fee menu on this page depends on which one the search engine handed you. Discount - the cheapest headline fare - includes the free 10 kg cabin bag and nothing else: no checked bag, paid seats, USD 180 change fees, 20% miles. Basic adds one 23 kg checked bag and halves the change fee. Classic makes the standard seat free. Plus adds a second 23 kg bag, the comfort seat and full refundability. Executive carries two 32 kg bags, lounge access and premium boarding2.

The two bar charts measure the ladder two ways: checked bags included per tier (zero to two) and miles earned per euro (20% to 200%)2. The miles chart is the honest portrait of the ladder - Executive earns ten times Discount - and it explains why TAP's frequent flyers rarely buy the Discount fare the aggregators advertise. How much does TAP Portugal charge for seat selection, in the end? On Discount and Basic, a per-seat charge shown dynamically at booking; from Classic upward, the standard seat is free, and Plus throws in the comfort seats too6.

How much is a checked bag on TAP Portugal?

The direct answer: on the Discount fare, the first checked bag starts at about USD 37 prepaid - EUR 32 - and climbs with route, season and check-in channel; pay at the airport in August and it costs more than the prepaid portal price 2. From the Basic tier upward the first 23 kg bag is included, which is why the fee table's first row is the only one most TAP passengers ever pay. The overweight surcharge is the fee that stings: from USD 160 on US routes per direction2.

How much is extra baggage on TAP Portugal routes beyond the first bag? The second bag prices dynamically by route the same way, and Star Alliance Gold status or TAP's co-branded Visa adds one free bag even on Discount2. The extras bar chart stacks the three documented from-prices - bag USD 37, meal USD 5, overweight USD 160 - and the proportion is the point: TAP's ancillary revenue comes from many small bags, not a few huge ones5.

Seats and wifi: the two fees left

How much is wifi on TAP Portugal flights? The base is free: TAP's Free Messaging keeps iMessage, WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger alive above 10,000 feet, text only6. Beyond that, three paid packs - Small at 100 MB, Medium at 200 MB, Large at 500 MB - price dynamically per flight, which is why this page quotes the megabytes and not an invented euro figure7. The fleet that carries it all: Airbus A330neo and A321LR long-haul aircraft, with 40+ European destinations on the short-haul side7.

Seat selection follows the tier rules priced in the previous section: free standard seats from Classic, free comfort seats on Plus, paid everywhere below, and the seat map's extra-legroom rows are the priciest clicks on any TAP booking6. The change and refund fees complete the picture: USD 160-180 to change Discount and Basic tickets, USD 125-250 to process a Classic refund, free changes from Plus upward2. None of these numbers is a guess; all come from the tier table TAP publishes and NerdWallet and deeparrival transcribe2.

Routes worth knowing: Toronto and Lagos

Two of the brief's gateways deserve route-level detail. How much is a flight from Toronto to Portugal, route by route? Toronto-Lisbon runs nonstop seven times a week on Air Canada, with momondo's average at USD 697 and deals from USD 421 - and Skyscanner's route data names October the cheapest month1. Lagos-Lisbon has no nonstop: every itinerary connects through Lisbon's European hub partners, which is why the Expedia floor sits at USD 852 round trip and the Google Flights typical band reaches EUR 1,650 - the dearest corridor on this page, and a good argument for booking the two legs separately only with real connection protection1.

The routes table gathers the nonstop counts, the typical prices and the deal floors per corridor. The pattern to remember: nonstop competition - Toronto, New York, London - is what pushes averages down, and one-stop corridors price at a premium that survives every sale season1.

Booking windows and cheap months

The aggregators' own data settles the timing questions. October is the cheapest month on the Toronto route; the London fare floor needs nothing but an off-peak Tuesday; the USD 243 New York deals demand flexible-date searching; and TAP's bag fees rise in exactly the high season when fares also peak, so the checkout gap between Discount and Basic narrows in July and August 1. The booking table compresses the advice: compare the fare plus the USD 37 bag, not the fare alone2.

One structural note closes it: Lisbon's capacity constraint - one airport at half the national traffic - is the reason Portugal's fares do not fall as fast as its neighbours' in peak summer, and the reason the country's new-airport debate is really an airfare debate in disguise4.

A final caution about the floors. Every deal price on this page - USD 243 from New York, USD 421 from Toronto - assumes flexible dates, one carry-on and no seat preference; add the USD 37 bag and a paid seat and the Discount total creeps toward the Basic fare it started below, which is precisely the behavioural trap the tier ladder is built on2. The verified way to beat it is boring and repeatable: fly October, pack into the free 10 kg cabin bag, and let Classic's free standard seat save the selection fee5.

Conclusions

  1. Round trips to Portugal average USD 232 from London, USD 675 from New York and USD 697 from Toronto, with Lagos the dearest corridor from USD 852 1.
  2. The airports behind the fares are at records: 67.3 million passengers boarded in 2025, 23% above 2019, with Lisbon at half the national traffic3.
  3. TAP's Discount fare is a cabin-bag-only product: the first checked bag starts at USD 37, seats are paid until Classic, and wifi messaging is the only free extra2.
  4. The tier ladder is best read in miles - 20% on Discount to 200% on Executive - and in bags, zero to two, which is why the advertised fare rarely matches the checkout total2.
  5. Ninety percent of Portugal's passengers fly international routes, and the competition that implies is exactly why the fare floors - USD 232 London, USD 243 New York - keep falling while the ancillary fees quietly rise 3.

Route choice matters as much as date choice. Flying into one hub and out of another turns a single trip into a linear itinerary without backtracking, and the low-cost carriers' point-to-point fares often make the open-jaw combination cheaper than a return to the same airport. Midweek departures consistently price below weekend ones, and the January-to-March window offers the year's lowest transatlantic fares for travellers who do not need summer weather.

Methodology

  • Passenger traffic: Eurostat avia_paoc, 2009-2025, national and by route type
  • Airport records: ANA/VINCI and INE statements 2023-2025
  • Fares: published aggregator averages (Kayak, momondo, Skyscanner, Expedia), labelled
  • TAP fees and tiers: TAP official pages via NerdWallet, deeparrival, Going (2026)

Definition. 'Passengers boarded' is Eurostat's PAS_BRD: passengers departing on commercial flights at Portuguese airports; the national totals quoted by ANA/INE count arrivals and departures together, so the two series differ by design and are never mixed on this page. 'Average fare' is the aggregator's published typical round-trip price for one adult in economy. TAP fees are from-prices that rise with route, season and check-in channel. USD converts EUR at the ECB reference rate of 1.15.

Data sources. Eurostat avia_paoc (API, official); ANA/VINCI statements via Diario de Noticias, RTP and ANA newsroom; Jornal de Negocios and Expresso for national and Lisbon records; Kayak, momondo, Skyscanner and Expedia published averages (labelled); TAP official pages; NerdWallet, deeparrival and Going TAP tier and fee tables (labelled).

Calculations. Growth rates and the 2024 international share are our calculations from Eurostat counts. The passenger projection is a least-squares line fitted on 2021-2025 only - the 2020 cliff makes a full-series fit meaningless - extended to 2035; it is our calculation, not a forecast. Fare mid-points reuse the aggregators' published averages and are not our own estimates.

Limitations. Airfares swing by season, booking window and search personalisation; the quoted averages are the aggregators' published typicals, labelled industry, and the deal floors require flexible dates. TAP's seat-selection and Wi-Fi prices are dynamic and shown only at booking; the page quotes the tier rules and package sizes instead. Lisbon's 2024 airport total was not published in an extractable statement, so the 2023 figure (33.6M) and the 2025 share statement are used, years labelled. The projection rests on four post-pandemic years.
