Livraria Lello, Porto's 1906 bookshop

Livraria Lello in Porto: the 15.95 euro ticket-voucher that comes off a book, daily hours and five closed days, the 1906 staircase and the Harry Potter story.

Livraria Lello is the one bookshop in Porto that you cannot simply walk into. Entry is by a ticket booked for a date and time, the ticket doubles as a voucher against a book, and a missed slot is lost. Settle the ticket before the trip and the visit is easy: the standard voucher was 15.95 euros in October 2026, the shop is open every day from 9:00 to 19:30, and it shuts on five days of the year.

The building is the reason people come. It dates from 1906, a neo-Gothic shopfront on Rua das Carmelitas, and inside a red staircase climbs to a gallery under a stained-glass skylight. The staircase is concrete painted to look like wood, its colour is an accident of 1993, and the story that ties the shop to Harry Potter has never been confirmed by the author.

The ticket is a voucher

The common mistake is to treat the entry fee as money gone. Livraria Lello tickets are vouchers: what you pay to get in comes off a book bought inside. The standard Ticket-Voucher, for a self-guided visit, was 15.95 euros in October 2026 and is redeemable against a title from the shop's own imprint, Livraria Lello Editions. Even a visitor who only wants to buy a book needs one.

Three other tickets exist. A combined ticket adds the Livraria Lello Foundation at the Leça do Balio Monastery, from 29.95 euros; the Foundation opens Wednesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 18:30. The Gema ticket, at 100 euros, gives priority entry and a guided visit of the Gema Room, where the rare books are kept. A separate 8 euro ticket covers the Ai Weiwei exhibition alone and does not open the historic building.

Children up to and including 3 years old go in free, with proof of age. A voucher is not refundable. Its date and time can be changed once, up to 24 hours before the slot, and a visitor who does not turn up loses it. Buy on the shop's own ticket site, where these prices were read; they move, so check them on the day you book.

The interior of Livraria Lello, with its staircase and galleryThe staircase is concrete, painted to look like carved wood.

When the doors are open

The mistake here is to arrive on a holiday. Livraria Lello opening hours are 9:00 to 19:30, Monday to Sunday, and the shop is closed on five days: 1 January, Easter Sunday, 1 May, 24 June and 25 December. The June date catches people out. It is São João, Porto's own municipal holiday, and the state museums close that day too.

Entry is by time slot, so the hour on the voucher matters more than the hour you reach the street. By law, people with disabilities or reduced mobility, people aged 65 and over, pregnant women and anyone with an infant have priority at the door. Everyone else goes in at the time they booked.

Inside, payment is by cash, Multibanco, Visa or MB WAY. The address is Rua das Carmelitas 144, and the hours and closed days are set out in the shop's own visitor questions.

What to look at inside

The mistake is to climb the stairs, take the photograph and leave. At the Lello bookshop Porto keeps a working shop of 1906 almost whole, and the details repay a slow look.

Start outside. The façade is neo-Gothic, the work of the engineer Francisco Xavier Esteves, and the two painted figures on it, Art and Science, are by José Bielman. Inside, the ceilings, columns and walls carry Art Deco detail, and the busts of six Portuguese writers stand among the shelves, Eça de Queirós and Camilo Castelo Branco among them.

The staircase is the centrepiece. It was one of the first concrete staircases built in Portugal, and what looks like carved wood is painted stucco. Esteves signed it at the foot. Its red is an accident: the steps were painted that colour by mistake during works in 1993, and the shop kept it.

Look up for the stained-glass skylight, designed by the Dutch artist Samuel Van Krieken and made by the Vidraria Antunes workshop. It carries the motto Decus in Labore, dignity in work, and it was restored in 2018. Then look down. The rails set into the floor carried a trolley of books from the basement store to the shop floor from 1906 until the early 1990s; the trolley on show is a replica.

The story about the wizard

The mistake is to take the story as settled. The Livraria Lello Harry Potter connection is a tale the city likes to tell: J. K. Rowling did live in Porto, and the staircase and the shelves look the part. She has never confirmed that the shop inspired anything in the books. Treat it as a story that grew around the building, not as a fact about it.

What can be said for certain is older. The shop has traded here since 1906, and its own past has better anecdotes. During the most recent restoration, lottery tickets were found glued under the counters and shelves. Booksellers had hidden them there hoping to repeat the luck of Ernesto Chardron, who opened his bookshop with lottery winnings.

Guided walks on the wizard theme run about two and a half hours and meet at São Bento station. They tell the story on a tour of the centre; check the listing to see whether entry to the shop is part of it.

More than the old shop in 2026

The mistake is to think the visit ends at the red staircase. In 2026 the shop grew. On 27 June it opened the Manifesto Library, 100 titles chosen with the Service95 Book Club, and a new auditorium for talks, in spaces designed by Álvaro Siza, the Pritzker Prize architect. The standard voucher covers these new rooms along with the historic ones.

The scale of the place shows in one figure: in September 2026 the shop reported selling 120,000 books in a single month for the first time.

For the day itself, book the slot first and build the rest around it, since the voucher fixes the time. The Clérigos Tower sells a day ticket from 9:00 to 19:00, and the tiled hall of São Bento station is 340 m from the tower, so the three fit into one morning in the centre.
