The first question for a family in Porto is not which hotel but whether one room is enough. A family of four often does better with a family room or an apartment than with two doubles, and pays less. Choosing family hotels in porto starts there.

Of the 728 places to stay in central Porto above the site's quality floor, 279 list family rooms: 170 apartments, 49 hotels, 23 guest houses, 14 hostels and 10 aparthotels. Their median score is 8.6 and their median price 155 euros for two nights from Saturday 10 October 2026. Below are the strongest of them, what child facilities they list, and what the city's hills mean for a pushchair.

Three places with family rooms and strong scores, at three prices.

The strongest results

Weighed by the number of reviews behind each score, the best family hotels in porto portugal with family rooms are, among hotels, the Ribeira Douro Hotel, at 9.6 from 1,983 reviews and 353 euros for two nights, and the five-star Torel Saboaria and GA Palace, both 9.6 and both offering babysitting, at 420 and 920 euros.

Among aparthotels, which give a family a kitchen and a hotel desk at once, Porto River in the Ribeira scores 9.5 from 827 reviews at 231 euros, and S.Bento Residences 9.4 from 623 reviews at 217 euros; both list babysitting, and S.Bento Residences high chairs as well.

Among apartments, Vila Catarina Luxury Apartments scores 9.6 from 748 reviews at 174 euros, Almada Domus 9.4 at 145 euros and Mayor's Apartments in Miragaia 9.4 from 732 reviews at 176 euros. All three list family rooms, high chairs and a lift.

The Praça da Ribeira and the quayThe riverfront is flat along the quay, and steep behind it.

What the facilities mean

Family rooms are the common facility; the rest are rarer. Across the 728 places, 145 list high chairs, 63 babysitting or child services, 35 meals for children and only 3 a playground. A family with a baby should filter for a high chair and a cot; one with older children cares more about space, a second bathroom and a kitchen. The facility lists are the owners' own, so ask the place directly when one item decides the booking.

The lift matters more in Porto than in most cities. The old centre is built of tall, narrow houses on a slope, and 306 of the 728 places list a lift. With a pushchair and luggage, a fourth-floor flat without one turns every outing into a climb. All six of the strongest apartments and aparthotels above list a lift.

The hills and the pushchair

The historic centre is cobbles, narrow pavements and hills. In the Ribeira, the Sé and Miragaia, a baby carrier beats a pushchair; the metro, the parks, the beaches and the modern museums are easy with one. That makes the Baixa the easiest base for a family: it is less steep, the metro is close, and it holds most of the places with family rooms.

A room by the river is the most memorable choice and the hardest with small children, because every outing starts with a climb. A family that wants the river should pick a place with a lift and plan the day around the metro and the funicular rather than the stairs.

A pool helps in summer, and it is rare: only 25 places in the sample have one. Vila Galé Porto - Centro in Bonfim has an indoor pool and family rooms, at 8.5 from 4,712 reviews and 190 euros. The hotels with a pool page lists every place with one.

What a family pays

A family room or an apartment costs more than a double, but less than two rooms. The median place with family rooms cost 155 euros for the two October nights, against 141 euros for the city as a whole.

By area, 165 of the 279 places with family rooms are in the Baixa, 40 in the Ribeira, 34 in Bonfim, 26 in Cedofeita and 11 in Miragaia and Massarelos. The Baixa therefore gives a family the widest choice at every price, and Bonfim and Cedofeita, a little further from the river, are where the cheaper family rooms tend to be.

Children under 13 pay no tourist tax. For the adults, the tax is 3 euros per person per night for up to seven nights, collected by the place to stay, as the city sets it: for two adults and four nights, 24 euros.

Many sights are free for young children, which changes the daily budget more than the room: children under 10 enter the Clérigos tower free, and under-12s the Palácio da Bolsa. The Porto with kids page covers the days themselves.

Before booking

Check four things on the booking page itself: that the room sleeps the whole family without an extra bed charged on arrival, that there is a lift, that a cot is available if needed, and the time the desk closes if the flight lands late.

Families renting a flat can look up its licence: every home let to visitors carries a local accommodation number from the Turismo de Portugal register, shown on the listing. The best hotels in Porto page ranks every place to stay, and the where to stay page compares the areas.

For a stay of a week or more, an apartment is usually the better answer for a family: a kitchen saves the cost and the effort of eating out three times a day with small children, and a washing machine, where the flat has one, means packing less for the whole family. For a short city break, a hotel or an aparthotel with a desk and breakfast takes more of the planning off the parents.

Common questions

How many hotels in Porto have family rooms?

279 of the city centre's 728 well-rated places list family rooms, most of them apartments (170) and hotels (49).

Do children pay Porto's tourist tax?

No. Children under 13 are exempt. Adults pay 3 euros per night for up to seven nights.

Which area of Porto is best for a family?

The Baixa is the easiest: less steep than the riverfront, close to the metro, and home to most of the places with family rooms.

Is Porto easy with a pushchair?

Not in the old centre, which is cobbled and steep; a baby carrier is easier in the Ribeira, the Sé and Miragaia. The metro, the parks, the beaches and the modern museums are easy with a pushchair.
