A pool is rare in central Porto. The old city is built tight on a hillside, and of 728 places to stay above the site's quality floor, only 25 list a swimming pool of any kind. Two are five-star: Eurostars Aliados, with an indoor pool, at 8.9 from 4,050 reviews and 240 euros, and Infante Sagres, a historic hotel and member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, with an outdoor pool, at 8.8 and 431 euros. Vila Galé Porto - Centro, a four-star hotel in Bonfim with an indoor pool, scores 8.5 from 4,712 reviews at 190 euros, and Porta Nobre Boutique Hotel, a four-star aparthotel in Miragaia, 8.9 with an outdoor pool at 301 euros.

All six are large enough to carry hundreds or thousands of reviews, so their scores are steady. They come with the services of a hotel as well, which matters for a family arriving late or a traveller who wants the pool as part of a full hotel stay rather than a feature of a flat.

Apartments and guest houses

Most porto hotels with pools are not hotels at all. Fifteen of the 25 places are apartments, and two of the strongest results in the group are small houses: Casa do Cativo, a guest house at 9.4 from 744 reviews, and Porto Náutico - City Centre, apartments at 9.3 from 813 reviews, both in the Baixa and both around 220 euros for two nights.

The cheapest well-reviewed pool is at UMA Santa Catarina, apartments for adults only with a pool and a fitness room, at 9.0 from 1,046 reviews and 137 euros. Oporto Maison Anselmo, in Bonfim, scores 8.9 from 3,322 reviews at 174 euros.

Outdoor, indoor or private

Porto hotels with outdoor pool areas are the majority, twenty of the twenty-five. An outdoor pool is the one to want from June to September, when July and August average highs of about 25 °C, and whether it is open and heated outside the warm months is worth checking before an autumn or winter stay.

The two indoor pools, at Eurostars Aliados and Vila Galé Porto - Centro, work in every season, and both hotels are large, with thousands of reviews behind their scores. For a winter or spring stay, they are the only pools in the centre that can be counted on.

Three houses have a private pool for one party alone: Villa Almada in the centre, TMH Torrinha in Cedofeita, and the Porto Grandeur Collection's house on the Rua D. João IV, at 9.4 from 40 reviews and 248 euros for two nights. Private-pool houses have few reviews, as they take one group at a time.

Spas, and pools by the sea

For porto spa hotels, the list is short and mostly five-star: fourteen places in the sample list a spa, seven of them five-star hotels, among them GA Palace Hotel & Spa, Torel Saboaria and Wine & Books. Four places have both a spa and a pool: Eurostars Aliados, Catalonia Porto, Vila Galé Porto - Centro and the Porto Náutico apartments.

Many visitors who want to swim go to the sea instead. A pool changes the price less than the location does. The places with a pool in Bonfim and Cedofeita cost less than those in the Baixa, and the Baixa is where most of them are: twelve of the twenty-five.

By area, the median price of a place with a pool was 222 euros for the two nights in the Baixa, 174 euros in Bonfim and 146 euros in Cedofeita, a short walk further out. The single pool in the Ribeira belongs to a house at 339 euros, and Miragaia's two cost a median of 275 euros. A pool in Bonfim or Cedofeita is the cheapest way to have both the water and the centre within reach.
