A trip to Porto at the end of May can fall on one of the largest free arts festivals in Europe without the traveller knowing it is there. Serralves em Festa takes over the Serralves museum, its houses and its park for 50 hours without a break, from a Friday evening to a Sunday night, and every event in it is free. The 20th edition ran from 18:00 on Friday 29 May to 22:00 on Sunday 31 May 2026.
What a visitor gets is unusual for a festival of its size: concerts, dance, theatre, contemporary circus, cinema, workshops and exhibitions spread across the grounds, with the programme running through both nights. Entry also opens the museum and the houses that charge a ticket on any other day. The questions worth settling before going are which night to stay late, which part of the weekend suits children, and how to plan around a programme that has no single centre.

A festival with no main stage
The common mistake is to treat Serralves em Festa like a music festival, with a headliner to plan the weekend around. It is closer to a city of small events. In 2026 the programme held about 160 projects and 650 artists of 34 nationalities, spread over the museum rooms, the auditorium, the library, the patio of the Casa do Cinema and the open spaces of the park, from the Prado and the Parterre Central to the Bosque das Faias, the Caminho da Mata and the Treetop Walk.
The foundation describes it as the largest contemporary arts event in Portugal and one of the largest in Europe, and in 2019 it set its attendance record with more than 264,000 visitors over the 50 hours.
The disciplines change from one corner of the grounds to the next. The 2026 edition brought music by Conan Osiris, Mão Morta, Stephen O'Malley, Cybotron and Sabers of Paradise, performing arts by Gustavo Ciríaco, Alessandro Sciarroni and Isaac Chong Wai, and contemporary circus by Les Filles du Renard Pâle and Eunoia Kolektiva, alongside cinema, guided visits and workshops.
The better approach is to pick two or three fixed points from the programme and leave the hours between them for wandering, because much of what a visitor finds is met on the way from one space to another.

What free entry opens
Visitors used to paying at Serralves sometimes assume the festival is only the park. During the festival every activity is free, and entry covers the Serralves museum of contemporary art, the Álvaro Siza wing, the Casa de Serralves, the Casa do Cinema Manoel de Oliveira and the park.
On an ordinary day a ticket covering all of those spaces costs 24 euros, and single-space and seasonal prices change through the year. For a traveller with one visit to Serralves in the plan, a trip that lands on the festival weekend covers the whole foundation at no cost, with the programme on top.
The trade-off is the calm. Anyone who wants the galleries and the gardens quietly, with time in front of each work, is better served on another day with a ticket. The festival is the weekend for performance, music and the atmosphere of the grounds full of people, and the rest of the year is for the collection and the park themselves.
The park is 4.1 km (2.5 miles) west of the centre of Porto, about 64 minutes on foot. The Parque de Serralves and the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art have their own pages, with the hours of an ordinary week.

The nights
The mistake most visitors make is to leave at dusk. The programme does not stop, and some of its most distinctive moments are timed for the small hours.
On the night of 29 to 30 May 2026, Cybotron played the Prado at 00:15, Guttersnipe played the Ténis at 03:00, and Alponom and Stephen O'Malley played the Parterre Central at 05:45. Anyone who stays through a night sees the grounds in a way no ordinary opening hours allow.
The first night is the one to choose for this. The festival opens on Friday evening at 18:00, so a visitor arriving after a day in the city can join the evening programme and stay on into the night, then use Saturday to recover and return in the afternoon.
Saturday night follows the same pattern with a different programme. Sunday ends at 22:00, which makes it the evening for travellers with an early start on Monday.
Check the times of the acts you want in the festival programme, because the line-up and the order change each year.

Families, access and the city around it
Parents sometimes assume a contemporary arts festival is an adult affair. The programme is built for every age, with workshops, street theatre and circus among the concerts, and a family can plan a daytime visit on Saturday or Sunday around the workshops and the outdoor performances.
Accessibility is part of the organisation. The festival belongs to the Festivais Acessíveis programme of Turismo de Portugal and the Instituto Nacional para a Reabilitação. In 2026 a support stand for people with reduced mobility and a rest room were open every day from 10:00 to 22:00, and haptic vests, which let the wearer feel the music, were available at selected concerts on the Prado stage.
The festival also reaches beyond the park. Before the 2026 opening, Caravanserá, a large participatory parade by Gustavo Ciríaco, crossed the Baixa as a warm-up, and during the weekend the Mercado em Festa gathered more than 40 brands of fashion, jewellery, illustration and ceramics.
Several of the municipalities that founded Serralves took part in the programme too: Caldas da Rainha, Gondomar, Fafe, Leiria, Ovar, Porto, Santa Maria da Feira, Torres Vedras and Vila Real.
The programme is built for every age, with workshops and circus among the concerts.Planning a late-May trip around it
The dates move each year, and that is the first thing to check. The festival has run at the end of May, and the 2026 edition fell on the last weekend of the month, but the foundation sets each edition's dates and publishes them on Serralves and the festival site. Book flights only once they are announced.
Late May is a good time to be outdoors in Porto. The month averages a high of 20.1 °C (68 °F) and a low of 11.6 °C (53 °F), with 258 hours of sunshine, but it also brings 89.6 mm of rain on average, so a waterproof layer belongs in the bag for a weekend spent mostly under the sky. The May weather page has the rest of the month.
For a night at the festival, plan the way back before going. The park is 4.1 km from the centre, and a walk of about an hour at three in the morning is a different prospect from the same walk at noon.
A weekend in Porto can also combine the festival with the city: a Saturday morning in the centre, an afternoon and evening at Serralves, and Sunday by the river.
The dates move each year, so check them before booking.Serralves the rest of the year
Missing the festival does not mean missing Serralves. The museum, the houses and the park open through the year, with a single ticket for all the spaces, and the park is rated 4.7 out of 5 from 12,301 reviews.
The festival is also one of two large seasonal events at the foundation, which runs a Festa do Outono as well.
What changes outside the festival is the rhythm. An ordinary visit is a morning or an afternoon among the collection and the gardens, where the festival is a weekend of performance. Travellers who want both can see the museum on a quiet weekday and come back for the festival.
For the festivals that fill Porto's streets rather than its gardens, São João on the night of 23 June is the city's own party, free and outdoors.

Before you go
Download or bookmark the programme before the weekend, because with about 160 projects across the grounds it is the only way to find a particular act.
Choose the fixed points first: one night event, one daytime performance, one exhibition. Leave the rest of the time open.
Bring layers and something for rain. The weekend runs through two nights outdoors, and May averages 89.6 mm of rain.
Allow for the distance from the centre. At 4.1 km from the city, the park is not a place to drop into between two other plans.
If a quiet look at the collection matters, come back on another day with a ticket, and see the galleries and the park at an ordinary pace.
