Planning a trip around the night of 23 June raises one question before any other: where to be, and when. The São João do Porto festival is the city's own midsummer night, free and outdoors, running from the evening of 23 June until dawn on the 24th, which is a municipal holiday in Porto. What matters to a visitor fits into a few hours: the concerts from 20:00, the fireworks over the Douro at midnight, the walk downriver towards the sea afterwards, and a slow day on the 24th.

The night has its own customs. People tap strangers on the head with plastic hammers or a head of garlic flowers, sardines grill in the streets, caldo verde is served on the pavement, and sky lanterns and bonfires light the evening. None of it is ticketed: the stages, the fireworks and the fairgrounds are open to everyone, and what a visitor books ahead is a room, a dinner or an outing on the river earlier in the day.

Two ways to see the river and its bridges from the water, on the stretch the fireworks light up at midnight.

A street party, not a show

The common mistake is to treat the night as a single event with a start time. The fireworks are the only moment everyone shares on the clock. The rest is a city-wide street party that people move through, from square to square and from the stages down to the river, and a visitor who waits in one spot from early evening sees the smallest part of it.

Visitors often know it as the St John's festival Porto residents simply call São João, and it is as much a neighbourhood feast as a concert night. The grills, the hammers and the stalls are in the streets of the centre all evening, and after the fireworks many people walk downriver to the beaches at Foz and stay out until dawn.

The festival also builds for weeks before the night itself. In 2026 traditional folk groups sang and danced through the streets on Saturday 13 June, each of the city's seven parishes held its own concerts on Friday 19 June, and a community cascata, a model of the old city's houses built by volunteers, stood in the Mercado do Bolhão from 8 to 28 June.

After the night, the rusgas close the programme: parish groups parade with their own songs and choreographies and finish in front of the city hall, where a jury judges them. They were once spontaneous groups walking the streets, and in 2026 they paraded on Saturday 27 June from 18:30.

Watching the fireworks

The mistake is to aim for the foot of the Luiz I bridge as if the display came from one point. In 2026 the fireworks were fired over the river between the Ponte Luiz I and the Ponte da Arrábida, and for 12 minutes from midnight they lit the riverfronts of both Porto and Gaia. The whole river bank on either side, between the two bridges, faces the show.

For São João do Porto festival photos with the river in them, the banks between the two bridges put the fireworks, the water and a bridge in the same frame. Arrive well before midnight and choose a spot you can stay in, because a place on the bank is hard to change once the display begins.

Before the display, in 2026, the electronic duo Karetus played a DJ set on the Douro from 22:30 until midnight, so the river has music for the last hour and a half of waiting.

São João do Porto festival images of the rest of the night need no particular spot at all. The hammers, the grills and the stalls fill the streets of the centre through the evening, and the three main stages are in the city above the river. The best plan for a first São João is to spend the evening in the streets and at a stage, and to walk down to the river in time for midnight.

The stages and the headliners

The São João festival Porto 2026 programme put three main stages in the city on the night of 23 June, each running from 20:00 to 04:00. Choosing between them is the first decision of the evening, and the usual error is to choose by the biggest name alone. In 2026 the headline sets on the two largest stages began at 00:20, eight minutes after the fireworks ended, and those stages are up in the city while the display is on the river. Seeing both means choosing between the start of a set and the fireworks.

The Avenida dos Aliados, the city's largest open-air venue, had the most popular acts: Quinta do Bill at 22:00 and Tony Carreira from 00:20 to 02:00, with a presenter and DJs filling the gaps until 04:00.

The Largo do Amor de Perdição was the popular-music stage. D.A.M.A. played from 00:20, and the collective Noz Pimba played the classics of Portuguese popular music before and after them, through the night.

The Palco Juventude at the Casa da Música was the alternative. The band Nunca Mates o Mandarim curated the line-up, with indie pop, dance music and a closing DJ set on the skatepark until 04:00.

The line-up changes every year, and the city publishes each year's programme on Agenda Porto, with every stage and its hours.

Sardines, basil and hammers

Visitors sometimes expect a festival food court. The food of São João is simpler and belongs to the street: sardines on the grill and caldo verde, shredded couve and potato with a slice of chouriço, the soup of the night.

The customs start before dark. During the day, street vendors in the Baixa sell pots of basil, leeks and lemon balm, and the traditional bakeries sell the Bolo de S. João, the cake named after the saint. At night the plastic hammers come out, along with heads of garlic flowers, and people use both to tap strangers on the head.

The hammers are the part first-time visitors hesitate over, and they are the custom that everyone in the streets shares, from the Baixa down to the river.

Sky lanterns and bonfires are part of the tradition too.

For something sit-down, the Mercado do Bolhão held its own afternoon arraial in 2026, with concerts by Jorge Lomba at 16:00 and Nel Monteiro at 17:00, in the same market hall where the community cascata was on show.

A month of fairgrounds and parades

The mistake is to think the festival is one night. The St John festival Porto 2026 calendar ran for more than a month, from the end of May to early July, with the night of the 23rd at its centre and something on in the city for most of June.

Three fairgrounds, the divertimentos, opened in 2026: at the Fontaínhas from 29 May to 29 June, in the Jardim do Calém at Lordelo do Ouro from 5 June to 5 July, and on the Avenida de D. Carlos I at Foz from 9 June to 5 July.

Their hours were Monday to Thursday 14:00 to 23:00, Friday 14:00 to 01:00, Saturday and the eve of a holiday 10:00 to 01:00, and Sunday 10:00 to 23:00. On 23 June they opened from 14:00 until 06:00, and their food stalls opened at 12:00 every day.

The community cascata was also open to anyone who wanted to help build it: free workshops ran on the Saturdays of 6, 13, 20 and 27 June, from 11:00 to 13:00 and from 15:00 to 17:00.

The city spent 800,000 euros on the 2026 festival, 20,000 euros more than the year before, and put the increase into more music and more security.

A fairground during Porto's São João seasonThe festival runs for more than a month around the night of the 23rd.

The day after, 24 June

The 24th is a municipal holiday in Porto, and a plan built for an ordinary weekday can run into closed doors. Livraria Lello, for one, closes on 24 June. Before booking a visit or a tour for that day, check that the place opens on the holiday.

In 2026 the São João concert of the Banda Sinfónica Portuguesa was held at 18:00 at the Concha Acústica in the gardens of the Palácio de Cristal, set in the late afternoon so that the night's revellers could rest first. The gardens are free to enter, and the concert makes a gentle close to the festival for anyone still in town.

Weather is on the festival's side. June in Porto averages a high of 23.5 °C (74 °F) and a low of 14.5 °C (58 °F), with 39.9 mm of rain in the month and 274 hours of sunshine. A night outdoors until dawn still calls for a light layer, and the June weather page has the rest of the month.

Planning a trip around the night

The date is the fixed part. The night is always 23 to 24 June, and in 2027 it falls on a Wednesday night into Thursday. The detail is not fixed: the stages, the line-up, the fireworks and the fairground dates are set by the city each year.

The festival São João Porto 2026 programme is the pattern to plan with, and the 2027 one is the one to book against. Check the city's agenda for it before building a trip around a headline act or a fairground date.

The mistake on the night itself is to plan the way home last. The stages closed at 04:00 in 2026, and the evening ends far from where it began, on the river or at Foz. Staying within walking distance of the centre or the river takes the question away.

On the metro, an Andante single in the central zone is 1.40 euros for an hour's travel, and a day ticket for that zone 5.35 euros. Check the night's timetable with Metro do Porto before counting on a train back, and see getting around Porto for the tickets.

Arrive a day or two early if the calendar allows. The fairgrounds and the cascata are already open, and the 23rd is better spent in the streets than in transit.
