Porto is one of the easier cities in Europe to visit alone. The centre is compact enough to walk, the public transport is simple, food is good value, and the evening is spent in bars and small restaurants where a single diner is normal rather than an exception.
Travelling solo still raises its own questions, taken in order: safety first, including the places where pickpockets work, then what a bed costs in a hostel dorm and which hostels score best. It lists restaurants that suit one person at the counter or a small table, and the tours, food walks and fado evenings where it is easy to meet other travellers. It ends with how to keep costs down on transport and how to do day trips alone, by train or on a group tour, so the trip can be planned for one without paying for two.

FoodHow safe Porto is alone
The mistake is to worry about the wrong risk. Porto is safe by European standards, and the realistic problem for a visitor is theft from bags and pockets, not violence.
Two places call for particular care. The first is metro line E from the airport, which is often crowded with travellers carrying luggage. The second is the historic trams, especially tram 1 along the river, which carry mostly visitors. On both, keep a bag closed and in front, and keep a phone out of back pockets.
The same care applies in the crowds on the Ribeira quay and on São João night, 23 to 24 June, when the whole city is in the streets.
Carry a card and a little cash. Card payment is accepted almost everywhere, including on buses and in markets, but small tascas and the historic trams can be cash only.
At night, the centre is busy until late around the Galerias de Paris near the Clérigos and in the Baixa. The steep lanes of the old town are quieter, so plan the route back to where you are staying.
Travellers from the UK, the US, Canada and Australia can stay up to 90 days in any 180 without a visa, registered by the Entry/Exit System since 10 April 2026; the rules are set out by EU home affairs.

Where to sleep: hostels and single rooms
The mistake is to assume a hostel is always the cheapest bed. Prices vary widely, and a dorm bed in a top-rated hostel can cost as much as a basic private room.
For a two-night stay from 10 October 2026, 1,000 places had rooms in central Porto, 31 of them hostels, and 22 of those were rated 8 or more. Dorm beds ranged from about 16 to 51 euros a night, with a median of about 27 euros. Prices change with the season and the day of the week.
The Gallery Hostel, in Cedofeita, is the best rated, at 9.3 from 2,461 reviews, with a bed in a six-bed mixed dorm at about 51 euros a night for those dates. Urban Garden Porto Central Hostel, near Bolhão metro station, offers capsule beds in a 12-bed dorm with a private bathroom, rated 8.8. Being Porto Hostel, near São Bento, scores 9.7 for location. Rosalma Hostel, 116 m from Bolhão station, has a female-only dorm and is rated 8.5.
For the lowest prices, SUPERNOVA Hostel near Trindade offered a bed in a ten-bed dorm at about 16 euros, and Easy Host Porto, beside Campo 24 de Agosto station, a single dorm bed at about 17 euros.
The tourist tax of 3 euros a night applies to hostel beds as well, for up to seven nights, and is charged by the hostel.

Eating alone
The mistake is to eat takeaway every evening to avoid a table for one. In Porto, many of the best-known places are counters, cafés and small rooms where eating alone is normal.
Of 554 restaurants across the city, 223 are popular for solo dining, and 54 of those pair a rating of 4.5 or higher with 500 reviews or more.
Busiest of all are the Casa Guedes pair, open daily from midday until midnight, where a meal runs to 10 to 20 euros. Almada Café, one of the cheapest, charges 5 to 10 euros a head; picanha and francesinha are what diners mention, and it closes on Sundays. Cult of Pita, open all day and every day, is known for falafel and hummus. Negra Café in the Baixa serves brunch from 8:00, at 10 to 15 euros.
For something more social, a table at the bar of a wine bar near the Ribeira suits a single diner in the early evening.
Tascas, the small traditional taverns, and the stalls of the Mercado do Bolhão are easy to eat in alone. Go on a weekday or a Saturday: the market is shut on Sundays.
The couvert, the bread and olives brought to the table, is charged only if eaten; sending it back is normal.

Meeting people: tours, food walks and evenings
The mistake is to expect to meet people by chance. In Porto, as elsewhere, the reliable way is to join something with a small group.
A walking tour on the first morning is the simplest start. Several run in the historic centre for about three hours, covering the cathedral, the Clérigos and the old streets, and they give a map of the city along with company.
Food tours do the same over a meal. Three-hour food walks and evening food crawls with drink pairings visit several places with a small group, which solves the question of dinner alone for one night.
Cooking classes are another option. Several teach the pastel de nata, the custard tart, in hands-on sessions, some ending with a glass of Port.
For the evening, fado shows last about an hour and are seated, which suits one person. Afterwards, the Galerias de Paris bar quarter is the liveliest place in town after midnight.
Hostels with common areas and organised evenings help too; check the listing of the hostel you choose.
The best bars in Porto guide covers where to go by kind of evening.
The reliable way to meet people is to join something small.Getting around cheaply
The mistake is to take taxis up every hill. On your own, the metro, the buses and your feet are cheaper and rarely slower in the centre.
A one-hour Andante ride within the central Z2 zone is 1.40 euros, on metro or bus alike; a 24-hour Z2 ticket costs 5.35 euros. The paper card itself costs 0.60 euros. Ten singles loaded together give one extra ride free.
From the airport, metro line E reaches Trindade in the centre in about 27 minutes, on a Z4 single of 2.30 euros.
The historic trams are a separate fare, about 6 euros a single, so they are a ride to take once rather than daily transport.
Much of the best of Porto is free: the two hilltop viewpoints on the Gaia bank, the Palácio de Cristal gardens, the Fontainhas viewpoint and the Passeio Alegre in Foz. The Andante tariffs are published by Metro do Porto.
The Andante Tour card covers the whole network for one or three days, but it is transport only and includes no museum entry.
On your own the metro and your feet beat taxis on every hill.Day trips alone
The mistake is to assume a day trip needs a tour. Several of the best are cheap and simple alone by train.
The urban trains from São Bento reach Guimarães and Braga in about an hour, each for 3.60 euros one way on a rechargeable Siga card. Aveiro is about 1 h 15 min away for 3.95 euros.
Up the Douro, a single to Régua or Pinhão costs between 11 and 12.50 euros, and the line hugs the river.
Group tours make sense for places that are hard to reach without a car, such as the Arouca walkways and suspension bridge, Peneda-Gerês or a Douro day with wineries. On a group tour, a solo traveller pays the same per person as everyone else and has company for the day.
For a longer trip, Lisbon is 2 h 58 min on the Alfa Pendular from Campanhã, and Santiago de Compostela 3 h 59 min to 5 hours by coach. Porto is also the most popular start of the Portuguese Way of the Camino, which many people walk alone: about 233 km to Santiago in 12 to 14 days.

Practical notes for one
Keep a copy of your passport separate from the original, and use the hostel or hotel safe.
Choose a bed near a metro station. Rosalma and Urban Garden are close to Bolhão, SUPERNOVA and Fantasy Hostel to Trindade, and Being Porto Hostel to São Bento, which all save climbs after dark.
Book the popular tours a day or two ahead in summer, when small groups fill.
Eat lunch as the main meal to save money: many restaurants serve lunch from noon, and the sandwich houses and cafés are cheapest.
Avoid Mondays for museums, when most of the city's museums close, and use them for a walk or a day trip instead.
Mains electricity is 230 V with type F and C sockets, so UK and US travellers need an adapter.
The one-day plan is a good first-day route for one.
