A group trip to Porto is mostly a logistics exercise. The city itself suits a group well: it is compact, the food is good value, the evenings are long, and the classic activities, Port tastings, river cruises and food walks, are more fun shared. What is harder is getting eight people into the same guided visit, around the same dinner table and under the same roof.
Those three problems are dealt with below, starting with the group limits and special programmes at the main sights, the restaurants that are good for groups and take reservations, and the kinds of places to stay that sleep four, six or more, with prices for an autumn weekend. After that come activities that work for a group, how to move a group around the city cheaply, and the day trips where a shared tour or a hired car beats the train. The aim is a trip where the organiser books once and everyone else just turns up.

Group limits at the sights
The mistake is to turn up with twelve people and expect to join the next tour. Several of Porto's main sights cap group sizes or run separate programmes for groups.
At the Palácio da Bolsa, every visit is a guided one and groups are capped in size. With a lunch break in the middle of the day and a 14-euro adult ticket, it pays to reserve one slot for the whole party through the Palácio da Bolsa.
Casa da Música's guided tours take a maximum of 35 people, last about an hour and cost 12 euros each, and they are scheduled around rehearsals and concerts.
The Torre dos Clérigos runs an out-of-hours programme for groups of 25 to 50 people on request, a way to have the tower to yourselves; details are with the Clérigos ticket office.
At the Paiva Walkways, there are no group discounts, entry needs an online reservation, and there is a daily visitor limit, so a large party should reserve the moment its dates are settled.
In Gaia, keep the group on one Port visit: Taylor's sells its audio tour online by time slot, which lets everyone start together.
Several sights cap group sizes or run separate group programmes.Restaurants that suit a group
The mistake is to look for a table for ten at 20:30 on a Saturday without a booking. Most of the well-rated places that suit groups take reservations, and many recommend them for dinner.
Of 554 restaurants across the city, 162 are good for groups, and 136 of those accept reservations. Of those, 39 have a rating of 4.5 or better from 500-plus reviews.
For a relaxed, inexpensive group meal, both branches of Casa Guedes are open every day from noon to midnight at 10 to 20 euros a person; shank and pork sandwiches are what diners mention. Almada Café, at 5 to 10 euros, serves picanha and francesinha and closes on Sundays.
For a sit-down dinner, Uma Marisqueira, also called Zé Bota, rated 4.7, specialises in seafood rice at 20 to 40 euros and recommends booking for dinner. Salve Simpatia, a Brazilian restaurant on Rua da Picaria rated 4.6, serves feijoada and picanha with Brazilian music, at 15 to 25 euros. Brasão Antas, rated 4.7, and Grill it, rated 4.8 at 10 to 15 euros, both recommend booking dinner.
For a celebration, The Door on Rua do Almada, rated 4.8, opens every evening from 18:00 and recommends dinner reservations.
Up the coast in Matosinhos, Tito 2 grills sardines, turbot and swordfish for 15 to 35 euros a head, and suits a big table.
The places that suit groups take bookings; walk-ins rarely work.Where a group can stay
The mistake is to book several hotel rooms and scatter the group across floors. Apartments dominate the central market and keep everyone under one roof.
Taking an October weekend as the sample, 10 to 12 October 2026, the centre offered 770 apartments, 91 hotels, 58 guest houses, 31 hostels and 17 aparthotels, 1,000 places in all.
Most apartments sleep two. Only 114 could put four or more people in one unit, typically for around 167 euros a night that weekend, and just 8 could take six. A party of six or eight will usually need two apartments in the same building or street, so reserve well ahead; rates rise and fall through the year.
Hotels suit a group that wants breakfast and a reception: the 91 hotels had a median of about 223 euros a night for a room on the same dates.
Check the practical details for a group: whether there is a lift, since older central buildings often lack one; the check-in time, as a late arrival needs a key arrangement; and any minimum stay.
For a group, the tourist tax adds up: 3 euros a head each night, capped at a week, with under-13s exempt.

Porto: Pastel de Nata Cooking Class with Grandma's Recipe
★ 5.0 · 1,805 reviewsA two-hour pastel de nata cooking class, a shared activity that ends with everyone eating what they made.
Activities that work for a group
The mistake is to plan a group trip around sights that are best seen alone, such as a museum at your own pace. The activities that work are the shared ones.
Port tastings are the obvious start. In Gaia, the lodges sell visits of 50 minutes to an hour and a half, from Sandeman's basic visit with three Ports at 23 euros to longer tastings, as priced in September 2026.
River cruises under the bridges take a group of any size in 50 minutes to two hours, and some leave at sunset with Port on board.
Food tours and evening food crawls turn a meal into the activity, with a guide ordering for the group. Cooking classes teach the pastel de nata, and some include a glass of Port.
Fado evenings of about an hour are seated and easy to book for several people.
For friends with energy, guided electric bike tours cover the hills in three hours, and a private tuk-tuk takes a small group round the viewpoints without the climbs.
For a festival weekend, Primavera Sound in June sold full passes at 180 euros and day tickets at 40 to 75 euros in 2026, and the São João street party costs nothing and fills the whole city.

Moving a group around
The mistake is to split a group across taxis for every short trip. In the centre, walking and the metro are simpler.
On the metro and buses, each person needs an Andante card; the paper card costs 0.60 euros, and a central Z2 single is 1.40 euros, valid for an hour. Buy ten identical singles in one go and the eleventh ride is free, handy for a group; a day ticket for the same zone is 5.35 euros.
The airport metro, line E, takes under half an hour to the centre, at 2.30 euros each. For a large group with luggage, a pre-booked transfer may be easier.
The heritage trams charge their own fare, roughly 6 euros, so treat them as a ride rather than as transport.
On foot, the old town is steep and cobbled, so plan routes downhill and agree a meeting point: the São Bento station hall and the Praça da Ribeira are easy to find.
The Metro do Porto tariff page lists every zone and ticket.

Day trips for a group
The mistake is to buy eight train tickets for a trip that is cheaper and simpler as a shared tour or a hired car. The maths changes with the size of the group.
By train, the urban lines to Guimarães and Braga cost 3.60 euros each way per person, and Aveiro 3.95 euros; there are no return tickets. For a group, these stay cheap, and the trains leave from São Bento.
The Douro by train costs 11.10 euros each way to Régua and 12.45 euros to Pinhão per person, and a quinta visit then needs transport from the station.
On a group tour to the Douro, Arouca or Gerês, nobody has to stay sober to drive back from the tastings. Private tours can be booked for a group alone.
A hired car or minibus makes sense for places without public transport. Ponte de Lima has no direct service from Porto, and the Paiva Walkways, about 67 minutes away by road, and Peneda-Gerês, about 90 minutes, are hard to reach without one. Régua is about 75 minutes by road.

A checklist for the organiser
Book the beds first, and look for apartments in the same building if the group is larger than four.
Book the dinner tables next, especially for Friday and Saturday, and ask whether the restaurant closes on Sundays or Mondays: Sunday is the most common closing day in Porto.
Book the Palácio da Bolsa, the Port lodge slot and any tour with a fixed start time.
Put the tourist tax in the shared budget.
Agree a meeting point and a plan for anyone who wants to leave early.
Check the calendar: most museums close on Mondays, and on 24 June, the city's holiday, national museums and the Lello bookshop are shut.
The one-day plan and the two-day plan give a route that a group can follow together.
Common questions
Can a large group visit the Palácio da Bolsa?
Yes, on a booked guided tour. The Bolsa is visited only with a guide and limits the size of tour groups, so book a slot for the group in advance.
Which Porto restaurants take group reservations?
Of 162 restaurants good for groups, 136 accept reservations. Well-rated examples include Casa Guedes, Uma Marisqueira, Salve Simpatia and Grill it.
Where can a group of six stay in Porto?
Apartments are the most common stay in central Porto, but few sleep six: for October 2026, only 8 of 1,000 places had a unit for six or more, so book two neighbouring apartments early.
Is there a group discount on the Porto metro?
There is no group ticket, but loading ten Andante singles of the same type at once gives one extra ride free.
