The Serralves Foundation is the one big sight in Porto that is not in the centre, and that is where most plans for it go wrong. It lies 4.3 km from the Avenida dos Aliados, a bus ride and not a stroll, and it is four things on one estate: a museum of contemporary art by Álvaro Siza, an 18-hectare park, a raised walkway through the trees and an Art Deco house. One ticket, 24 euros in October 2026, opens all of them.
The Foundation was created in 1989, and the whole estate has been a National Monument since 2012. Visitors rate it 4.6 out of 5 from 9,723 reviews, and what those reviews mention most is the gardens. Give it half a day: the buildings and the grounds are both the point.

Park onlyOne ticket or part of it
The mistake is to buy the cheaper ticket and find the museum door closed to it. Serralves museum tickets are not sold on their own: the standard ticket, 24 euros in October 2026, covers every space, which means the museum, the Álvaro Siza Wing, the park, the Treetop Walk, the house and the Casa do Cinema Manoel de Oliveira. The only partial ticket is for the park, at 15 euros. Children under 12 go in free.
Two tickets reward good timing. From Monday to Thursday a late-afternoon ticket, valid from 17:00, costs 15 euros for visitors from abroad and covers the museum, the park, the house and the cinema house. A family or group ticket, two full tickets and two reduced ones bought together, is 58 euros.
Residents of Portugal pay less at the desk, 20 euros for everything, and enter free on the first Sunday of each month. The Clérigos Tower also sells a combined ticket with Serralves for 27.20 euros, against 34 euros for the two bought apart. The Foundation lists its current prices on its visiting page, and they change with the season.
The Art Deco house, built between 1925 and 1944.The grounds
The mistake is to treat the grounds as the way from the gate to the museum. Serralves park covers 18 hectares and was designed by Jacques Gréber, and in 1997 it won the Henry Ford Prize for the Preservation of the Environment. It is rated 4.7 out of 5 from 12,301 reviews, higher than the museum.
The estate holds formal gardens, woods and a traditional farm, and sculptures stand in the open as a permanent exhibition.
A visitor who cares more for gardens than for contemporary art can buy the park ticket alone and lose nothing they came for. The reverse does not hold: the museum is never sold apart from the grounds, and every ticket that opens it includes the park anyway.

The walkway in the trees
The mistake is to expect a playground. The Treetop Walk Porto families ask about is a raised path that runs at the height of the tree crowns, built for looking at the life of the park from above. The Foundation presents it as a way to observe and study the biodiversity of the grounds.
The full ticket names it among the spaces it opens. In the reviews of the park it is one of the subjects that comes up most, after the gardens and the art.
The walkway is outdoors and the estate is large, so the weather decides how much of a visit it is worth. Porto's rain falls mostly from October to March; on a wet day, put the museum first and the trees second.

The pink house
The mistake is to walk past the house as an annexe. Casa de Serralves came first, and everything else was built around it. It was designed and built between 1925 and 1944 as a private home for Carlos Alberto Cabral, the second Count of Vizela, on what had been his family's summer estate at the edge of Porto. It is counted the most notable Art Deco building in Portugal.
Who designed it is told with care. The Foundation attributes it to the French architect Charles Siclis, whose part in the overall idea was decisive, and to José Marques da Silva, the architect of São Bento station, who developed and built it. The interiors drew on the leading furniture designers of the day, Ruhlmann, Lalique and Brandt among them.
The count moved in in 1944 and stayed only a few years. In 1955 he sold the estate to Delfim Ferreira on condition that nothing be altered, and the condition was kept. The house has been a Property of Public Interest since 1996 and now holds exhibitions.

Hours, and getting there
The mistake is to set out on foot from the centre. Four city buses stop at the estate: the 201 from Aliados, at the stop named Serralves; the 207 from Campanhã, at Serralves Museu; the 502 from Bolhão, at Pinhais da Foz; and the 504 from Boavista, at João R. Cabrilho. By metro, ride to Casa da Música on lines A, B, C, E or F, or change at Trindade from line D, and take bus 201, 502 or 504 or the metrobus from there. Bus times are on the STCP site.
In September 2026 the Foundation was open from 10:00 to 19:00, and to 20:00 on Sunday. It keeps one timetable from October to March and another from April to September, so check the hours for your month.
The museum is the work of Álvaro Siza, who won the Pritzker Prize in 1992, and its new wing, opened in 2024 and named after him, shows the collection and exhibitions on architecture. The Casa do Cinema Manoel de Oliveira, also by Siza, is given to the films of Portugal's best-known director.
