Twenty-two parks and gardens are listed, and only two of them are within a kilometre of the centre. Porto keeps its green space at the edges: the coast, the river bank west of the bridge, and the hill at Serralves.

The distances are the point. Parque da Cidade is 6.1 km (3.8 miles) out and the biggest of them, Passeio Alegre 5.0 km (3.1 miles) along the river at Foz, and both are a tram or a bus ride rather than a stroll.

Between them they carry 160,064 reviews, 13 are rated 4.5 or better, and each has its own page with the hours, the rating and what it rests on, what is nearby, and a sourced data sheet.

Porto's parks are few and large, and almost all of them are well reviewed: Fifteen of the 22 have 500 reviews or more, twelve have at least a thousand and thirteen are rated 4.5 or better. Only two lie within a kilometre of the centre; eleven sit between one and three kilometres and nine further out, so a park is a reason to leave the old town, by tram, metro or bus.

The best rated of the large ones are Parque da Cidade do Porto (4.7 from 28,918), Parque de Serralves (4.7 from 12,301), Jardim do Passeio Alegre (4.6 from 14,875), Quinta do Covelo (4.6 from 8,077), Parque das Virtudes (4.6 from 7,248). The Jardins do Palácio de Cristal are the most reviewed of all, 48,707 at 4.6, and the closest to the centre at 1.2 km.

The most reviewed

Jardins do Palácio de Cristal has 48,707 reviews at 4.6, three times the next garden and the only large one close to the centre at 1.2 km (0.8 miles). It is the default green space of a short visit.

Parque da Cidade follows with 28,918 at 4.7, out at the coast and large enough to lose an afternoon in. Passeio Alegre at Foz and Parque de Serralves round out the top four, and neither is reachable without transport.

Best rated with at least 500 reviews

Parque da Cidade and Parque de Serralves share the top score at 4.7, from 28,918 and 12,301 reviews. Both are big, quiet and away from the traffic, and both charge nothing to walk into.

The Crystal Palace gardens sit at 4.6 with far more evidence behind them, 48,707 reviews, and that is the honest comparison: a slightly lower score from ten times the visitors. Where the gardens differ is crowding, not quality.

None of the 22 closes on a weekday and twenty have a wheelchair-accessible entrance; the Palácio de Cristal gardens keep seasonal hours, 8:00 to 19:00 from October to March and 8:00 to 21:00 from April to September. Together the parks carry 160,064 reviews. Below 500 reviews the best rated are Jardins da Avenida de Montevideu (4.7 from 466) and Jardim de Sobreiras (4.6 from 182).
