Seventy-four monuments are listed, and most of them are things you pass rather than enter: statues, fountains, facades and a pillory. Forty-seven of them stand within a kilometre of the centre, which is why an afternoon in the old town collects a dozen without trying.

They carry 37,042 reviews between them, far fewer than the museums, because a monument is rarely a visit anyone writes up. Thirty-seven are rated 4.5 or better.

The monuments of Porto are mostly free and mostly outdoors: of the 74 listed, 25 are sculptures, 24 historical landmarks and 17 monuments in the narrow sense, with a few cultural landmarks, churches and one theatre among the rest. 47 stand within a kilometre of the centre, which is why a walk covers so many. Only nine have 500 reviews or more and six a thousand, because few of them sell a ticket; the exception is the Palácio da Bolsa, with 14,395 reviews at 4.5, which has its own page.

With 500 reviews or more the best rated are São João National Theater (4.8 from 1,707), Átrio da Estação de São Bento (4.7 from 1,119), Fonte dos Leões (4.6 from 1,652), Pillory of Porto (4.6 from 506), Monumento a Almeida Garrett (4.5 from 2,316). None of the 74 publishes a closing day, and 36 have a wheelchair-accessible approach.

The most reviewed

Palácio da Bolsa leads with 14,395 reviews at 4.5, and it is the one monument on the list that runs guided visits and charges for them. The Church of Saint Francis follows with 9,962 at 4.4, also ticketed, also indoors.

After those two the counts fall away fast: Monumento a Almeida Garrett has 2,316 and stands 23 m from the centre point, São João National Theater 1,707. A free thing on a square collects reviews slowly, whatever it is worth.

Best rated with at least 500 reviews

São João National Theater takes the top score at 4.8 from 1,707 reviews, and the hall of São Bento station follows at 4.7 from 1,119. Both are interiors you can walk into, which is the pattern in this group.

Fonte dos Leões at 4.6 and the Pillory of Porto at 4.6 are street furniture with 1,652 and 506 reviews. They rate well because nobody expects more of them than to be where they are, and they are.

Below 500 reviews the leaders are the places on the water: Cais da Estiva (4.7 from 132), Tide gauge of Foz do Douro (4.6 from 144), Estátua O Homem do Leme (4.6 from 111), with the primitive town wall (4.5 from 469) the best rated of the stones in the old town. The 74 together carry 37,042 reviews.
