Travellers who have seen the Ribeira and the Aliados often ask where Porto lives when it is not on show. One answer is Cedofeita, the quarter west of the Baixa, about 1 km from the Avenida dos Aliados. It holds the city's gallery street, Rua de Miguel Bombarda, a Romanesque church that is probably the oldest in Porto, and a dense cluster of small, well-reviewed restaurants.

Within about 600 m of the middle of Rua de Miguel Bombarda there are 36 well-reviewed restaurants, the Soares dos Reis National Museum and, at the quarter's edge, the gardens of the Palácio de Cristal. Rooms are mostly apartments and cost close to the city median. The sections below cover the galleries and their joint openings, the history behind the name, where to eat, where to stay, how to get around, and who Cedofeita suits better than the busier centre.

Two ways to take something of Porto's art home: a hands-on azulejo tile workshop with a local artist.

The street of galleries

The common mistake is to walk Rua de Miguel Bombarda on a weekday morning, find doors closed and decide there is nothing there. The street's life runs on its own rhythm.

Rua de Miguel Bombarda runs for 650 m, from Rua de Cedofeita to Rua da Boa Nova in Massarelos, and holds some dozens of contemporary art galleries. Until 1910 it was the Rua do Príncipe; the Republic renamed it after Miguel Bombarda, a doctor and republican.

Since 2007 the galleries have held the Inaugurações Simultâneas, simultaneous openings of their new exhibitions. They take place on a Saturday six times a year, every other month, and are free. The street and its neighbours, Rua do Rosário, Rua do Breiner, Rua da Maternidade, Rua D. Manuel II and Rua Adolfo Casais Monteiro, fill with performances, DJs and concerts, co-produced with the city.

Around the galleries, shops of fashion, vintage and design, cafés, guesthouses and artists' studios opened, and the area took the name Quarteirão Criativo Bombarda, the arts quarter.

Between 2008 and 2009 the street was redesigned for pedestrians, with pavement drawings by the artist Ângelo de Sousa.

For a visitor, an opening Saturday is the best time to come.

The oldest church and a name from a legend

Visitors rarely expect the city's oldest church to stand in its arts quarter. The Romanesque church of São Martinho de Cedofeita, on the Largo do Priorado, is probably the oldest in Porto, older than the cathedral itself.

An inscription over its door gives the year 559 as its foundation, but historians have judged it apocryphal, added during a later remodelling. The oldest reliable documents that mention the monastery are a papal bull of 1120 and a royal charter of 1218.

The name comes with a legend. The Suevic king Theodemir is said to have ordered a church in honour of Saint Martin of Tours while waiting for relics to heal his son, and to have built it so quickly that it was called "cito facta", made quickly. From that, the story goes, came Cedofeita.

For centuries the area was countryside outside the city walls. In 1710 it was brought within the city limits, and in 1834 Cedofeita was annexed to Porto, together with Bonfim.

In 2013 the old parish merged with its neighbours into a single union parish of the historic centre. In 2011 it had 22,077 residents on 2.71 km².

Eating in Cedofeita

The mistake is to plan dinner here for a Monday. Several of the quarter's best-reviewed restaurants close that day, among them CURB, Xau Laura, SIKTAK, Yalla Padaria, O Pit Dog and Swaad.

Museums and gardens at the edge

The mistake is to stop at the galleries. Two of the city's bigger cultural sights lie on the southern edge of the quarter, where Cedofeita meets Miragaia and Massarelos.

The Soares dos Reis National Museum, 428 m from the middle of Rua de Miguel Bombarda, is rated 4.4 out of 5 from 3,614 reviews. It opens Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00, closed on Monday, with a ticket of 10 euros.

The Jardins do Palácio de Cristal, 439 m away, are rated 4.6 from 48,707 reviews, one of the most reviewed places in Porto. They were open from 8 AM to 9 PM when last checked and are free to enter.

Nearby, the Sex Museum Portugal, 352 m away, is rated 4.3 from 410 reviews.

The gardens and the national museum belong to the riverside quarter below, and the Miragaia and Massarelos page covers them in more depth.

A day in Cedofeita can run from the galleries in the morning, through lunch in the quarter, to the museum or the gardens in the afternoon, all on foot.

The Crystal Palace gardens above the DouroTwo of the city's bigger sights sit on the quarter's southern edge.

Staying in Cedofeita

The mistake is to assume a quarter this close to the centre costs the same as the Ribeira. It costs less.

At least 108 places to stay are listed within 600 m of the middle of Rua de Miguel Bombarda, four in five of them apartments, with guest houses, hotels, bed and breakfasts and hostels among the rest.

A two-night search for 10 October 2026 put the median lowest rate in the quarter at about 142 euros a night, a few euros over the citywide 137 and well under the Ribeira's 182; the lowest single rate was about 51 euros a night.

Location scores a median of 9.1, a little under the Ribeira and the Baixa; overall ratings centre on 8.6, and a third of the rated places, 32 of 96, reach 9.0.

The best-known names by review count are the Dorma Essenzia Porto, rated 8.9 from 2,903 reviews, the Gallery Hostel, rated 9.3 from 2,461, and 100 Contos, a bed and breakfast rated 8.8 from 1,411.

Other bases are weighed in where to stay in Porto.

The gallery street in CedofeitaRooms here cost less than in the Ribeira, a few minutes further out.

Getting around from Cedofeita

The mistake is to count on the metro at the door. Cedofeita is served, but the nearest station depends on the street.

For the listed places to stay within 600 m of Rua de Miguel Bombarda, the nearest metro station is Lapa for 54, Aliados for 37, Carolina Michaelis for 14 and São Bento for 3.

A ride into the centre from Lapa is the standard central-zone single listed by Metro do Porto.

On foot, the Avenida dos Aliados is about 1 km away, about 16 minutes. The Palácio de Cristal gardens are a few minutes' walk to the south.

Who Cedofeita suits

Travellers on a second visit to Porto, or a first visit with an interest in art and food, get the most from Cedofeita. The galleries, the restaurants and the gardens are within walking distance, and the old town is a short walk away.

It suits travellers who want an apartment near the centre at a price close to the city median, since four in five listings are apartments.

It suits anyone planning a trip around an opening Saturday of the galleries.

It is less suited to a first visit with the big sights on the doorstep in mind, since the Ribeira and the cathedral are a longer walk, and anyone who needs the metro at the door.

For the river on the doorstep, the Ribeira is the choice; for more hotels and four metro stations, the Baixa.

Plan restaurant evenings for Tuesday to Sunday, and check the openings calendar before booking the dates.
