Why go, and how to fit it in
The boat ride is what visitors talk about most, and interactive exhibits, touch screens and an audio guide tell the history of the Portuguese discoveries. Children have plenty to keep them engaged, while anyone curious about the discoveries gets a hands-on museum rather than a silent gallery. The museum is a history museum and tourist attraction, with the ride as the main draw.
On Saturday, arrive at 10 AM, the quietest open hour; weekend afternoons build toward a 3 PM peak. It opens Tuesday to Friday 10 AM to 5:30 PM and Saturday and Sunday 10 AM to 6:30 PM, and it is closed Mondays. The Museum of Transport and Communication is 62 m away, Living Van Gogh Porto 108 m, and Miradouro Bandeirinha da Saúde 149 m, so a Miragaia museum-and-viewpoint stretch is easy to make.
